Dressing For an Interview

The common phrase “dress for success” is something that you should take seriously. Following this principle while you are on a job search will help increase your chances of getting a job. Many employers will look at how an applicant dresses and if you did it right, you can give an image of someone professional and ready to succeed.

You experiences, skills and qualifications will land you the job. But, your attire is something that can help you get it also. This is because you will give off a good impression.

To know what is right and what be a wrong thing to wear, you should first get some information about the company that you are applying for. This will give you an idea of what will be appropriate attire to wear while you are at that particular office. Though almost all industries can have generally, the same business attires, you need to see the small differences which are specific for that certain industry.

Commonly, for formal interviews like in a bank, you can wear the usual black or dark gray suit. A matching neck tie will be necessary to complete your look. The shoes can be the standard black lace up shoes.

For women, you can also have the conservative suit. Pants can be worn, but a skirt will be more appropriate. Your suit shouldn’t be too tight or lose. Wearing heels can also add a better touch to your look.

If you are expecting to have a casual interview, you can do away with the suits. What you can have are khaki pants or slacks and a neat dress shirt.

Generally, you have to make sure that everything is ironed well and free from any marks. On the way to your interview, you should take care of your outfit well. Small scuff marks can be very visible to observant employers.

The accessories that you can bring to an interview should be kept to a minimum. You can bring a neat briefcase to carry only the necessary documents for your interview. You need not bring bulky ones like rolling briefcases or rolling laptop cases. Even if you think that you have to come prepared, bringing too much cannot be good to look at. Just make sure that you have your documents with your like your resume, references, and other files that are required of you for that interview.

Jewelries should be kept to only watches for males, and watches and small earrings for females. Light make up and powder will also be helpful, even for males. This can help blot out shiny skin which is not very pleasant to look at. Your nails need to be cleaned and manicured well. If you maintain proper hygiene, then you need not think about a lot of things.

There are also some things that you should not bring to an interview. One of the most common mistakes is chewing a gum. Even though you are anxious, chewing a gum will reduce your professionalism. Also, cell phones may not be necessary.
