Hewlett Packard

Hewlett Packard is an American Organisation commonly referred to as HP. The Organisation is big in the sphere of information technology, particularly the manufacturing of computer printers, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded the company in California, USA inside a single garage space but today Hewlett Packard is one of the largest information technology conglomerates in the world and operates in a significant number of the world’s countries.

Hewlett Packard has it’s specialities in the development and manufacture of computers, both the development and manufacture of, data storage units and hardware associated with networking. Hewlett Packard markets its products specifically to the house hold as well as to small and medium sized organisations (typically less than one thousand employees) Hewlett Packard are also significant in e-commerce circles using on-line distribution channels as well as third party office/printer supply companies. The main product lines of Hewlett Packard include personal computers, enterprise and home servers, home and industry printers as well as imaging products such as scanners and cameras.

In the last reporting period of Hewlett Packard (2009), the company reported revenue’s of one hundred and fifteen billion US dollars. More pertinently in terms of financial figures, after a long market share battle with rivals IBM, Hewlett Packard claimed a lead in 2006 with their ninety two billion us dollar revenues marginally more, however over the three years since the gap has widened to a significant twenty one billion US dollars. Primarily it is believed that this gain in market share is due to their success in the home market with personal computers and home printing devices.

In the early days of Hewlett Packard, the company was rather unfocused as it worked on a wide range of product ideas simultaneously, therefore losing any focus on specific products and ideas. Those ideas ranged from industry to agricultural technology. Eventually the company decided that their main focus should centre around electronic test and measurement equipment aimed at the top end of the market. Early test equipment was such as time standards, thermometers, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, voltmeters and signal generators. The differentiation of Hewlett Packard products was that their range was more sensitive and therefore accurate than that belonging to their rival companies.

In 1984 Hewlett Packard introduced desktop specific printers utilising ink jet and laser printing technology which were popular with the home user. These have been designed since then to being successful multifunction products, as has the companies scanners. The best example of a multifunctional product would be a Hewlett Packard unit that prints, scans and faxes from the same unit.. Hewlett Packard’s printing speciality surrounds the development of hardware and software that can convert data from a computer into manageable sized dots that enable the printer to produce the required layout/pattern. Their reliability on this area of technology is such that their popular LaserJet laser printers utilise Canon’s printer engine run of technology designed by Xerox. In early 1986 Hewlett Packard registered it’s domain name (internet web address). It was the ninth registered dot com in internet history, today there are millions.
