If not addressed, file fragmentation will cause untold problems on computer systems. Performance suffers dramatically, unexplained hangs and crashes occur, and hard drive life is shortened. It is interesting however; that some sites will lessen its importance or worse, trust it to the care of cheap, free or otherwise ineffective fragmentation solutions. That is, until they realize just how bad fragmentation is and what it’s actually doing to their systems.

“All of my past experience was confirmation that disk fragmentation can cause serious performance issues with any system,” said Mike Mountain of the US Navy. “When I led the hardware maintenance team for this facility, it was interesting to see just how badly a user’s disk drive would become fragmented over time. Some were fragmented to the point where the system was barely usable. It is also amazing to note how fragmented a hard drive will become just by loading the OS and some applications.”

The same holds true for scheduled defragmentation; if there are no times when processes are not running on a system, scheduling is not possible.
