The Sofa Recliner Made Famous

If you walk into most North American living rooms, it’s likely you’ll find a sofa recliner or a couch facing the television.

Not only is the recliner a symbol of the American living room, but it also means comfort, luxury, relaxation – a way to treat yourself at the end of a hard day’s work. In many families, recliners are like a sacred spot for the man of the house, a throne that’s usually occupied only by him.

In Hollywood, sofa recliners perpetuate this very same idea. Here are some examples of the use of the recliner in television – and also some tips on what to look for when you’re buying a new recliner.

One of the first shows that can be attributed to “bringing back” the recliner chair is Fraser. Fraser Krane’s father, Martin, is known for his worn down, striped, yellow-orange-red recliner that’s kept intact with duct tape. Even with attempts to buy him a new one, Fraser fails time and time again to get his father to adopt a new one (i.e. something leather that would match better with his contemporary, sleek decor) but fails.

Another show that’s helped the sofa recliner to achieve fame in North America and around the world is Friends. All the way back in season 2 of the series, Joey and Chandler are seen buying two matching black leather recliners for their shared apartment’s living room. It’s no fooze ball table or giant white dog statue on wheels – but it’s one of the most memorable apartment accessories of the series. In the episode and many scenes after, the two are seen sitting in their respective recliners, watching television and nothing else for days.

You’ve got to love cartoons like The Simpsons and Family Guy that mock the realities of the American family – and it’s no more apparent than the way that the sofa is a central part of each home. In the Simpsons, the famous orange couch is like center stage at the house and never fails to portray Homer on the couch with a beer and his remote control.

Most recently in the hit television show, Glee, a main character, Finn, becomes angry with his mother when she tries to sell his late father’s recliner. His father passed years ago while fighting in Iraq and although the recliner hasn’t been used for many years, it is still so much part of Finn’s memory of his father. At the end of the episode, he gives up the recliner to his mother’s new boyfriend – a sign of moving on – and the acknowledgment of a new man of the house.

So if you’re looking for a recliner, be sure that you choose the right one to match your room design and color palette. Try using the reclining option to make sure that it’s both easy to use, smooth, and a proper angle to fit your height or body position. Last but not least, make sure you look over the recliner to make sure that it is sturdy and solidly built – this will last longer.
