There’s More to Training than Potty Training

Yes, many people consider the potty training aspect of getting a puppy, but this is not the only training your new puppy will need. When the puppy has grown into an adult dog and the furniture is wrecked, the dog does as he pleases and obeys no one; they wonder where they went wrong. Not only can the lack of behavior training cause problems such as this but the dog can become a nuisance to the whole family.

When you begin training your puppy from the beginning rather than waiting until he is older, he will learn quickly and know from the start just as a child does what you expect. After all, you wouldn’t wait until your child was 5 or 6 years old to start teaching them to walk and talk, now would you? A puppy needs consistency. This is the major cause of dog training that is not effective. Remaining consistent with the training will let him know exactly what you want.

Another thing that can make training your dog difficult is if you are not sure what you are doing. If not, take the puppy to a professional and let them train him. They know what they are doing and if you do not, the mistakes you make may not be so easy to change. If you opt to train your dog yourself, do not look at this as a chore that you have to put up with; enjoy the training time you have with your new pet and he will enjoy it as well.

Start with simple commands until he understands them and make the sessions short to start. A puppy does not have a long attention span so several times a day a few minutes at a time will get more results than trying to make him pay attention for along period of time. This is not going to be an overnight accomplishment either, so take your time and your puppy will learn.

The basics that are used to start are sit, down, heel, come and stay. When you dog learns these commands you can move on to more complex commands. Of course, when teaching them these simple commands, you will want to use a reward to give the dog an incentive to listen. Many people use treats and others use praise or a combination of both. Praise works wonders because dogs really do want to please you.

The use of a firm voice is important when training your dog as well. That does not mean you have to yell, just be firm. This lets your dog know you mean business. If you utilize a few simple techniques and train your dog correctly, you will be happier and he will be happier.
