Every year, there are more than six million vehicle accidents. These involve more than forty thousand fatalities. The various causes of these accidents include cell phone use, drunk drivers, lack of attention, speeding and more. Some accidents can be avoided by obeying rules of the road while others can be avoided simply by observing some driving etiquette for safer road travel.

One very obvious rule is to obey all traffic laws. This includes following the posted speed limits. Speeding is both dangerous and aggressive. Other laws that should not be ignored are the ones that regard yielding, use of blinkers and lights, and right of way laws. These rules have been set into place for the safety of motorists. They might seem like an inconvenience to some, but they do save lives.

A common courtesy that can be extended to other drivers is to refrain from using cell phones. Everyone is talking on the phone and texting; even while driving down a busy highway. Using your phone while driving means that your attention is not where it should be. When texting a message to a pal, you could very well cause a serious accident.

Please remember to observe which lanes are for faster travel. Those drivers who are driving the speed limit (or slightly above) may make use of the far left lane of the highway. This lane is also used for passing. Do not get into this lane and decide that you are going to cruise at a pace that is slower than other travelers. This angers people and forces them to pass you on the right (which can be illegal and dangerous). Slower drivers should try to remain in the far right lanes.

A safe and responsible driver does not tail others on the road. Tailing is when one individual is driving -tailing another car that has to brake suddenly, you may not be able to stop in time to avoid a collision with the person in front of you. One should keep in mind that tailing is also against the law in many places.

We all get mad at some point on the road. We may be frustrated or angered by other drivers. However, it is best to refrain from using rude finger gestures and cursing at others on the road. This may only instigate others to violence. You do not want to anger an individual who has had a bad day and who also happens to have a gun under the car seat. Road rage is a serious thing; which is why it is now illegal in some places to use finger gestures while driving.

Do not gawk when you see an accident. Humans are curious by nature but your curiosity may only cause a second accident. Use common sense when you come upon the scene of an accident. Help rescuers and law enforcement by keeping your eyes on the road in front of you and by moving away (if possible) from the site.

There are so many other common sense rules of the road that should be followed to keep yourself and others safe. Driving etiquette for safer road travel is something that can be observed by all. Just remember to follow laws, pay attention to what you are doing, and be a courteous driver.
