How to Clean Your Apartment Before You Move Out

Moving in to a new apartment is an important event and the things that need to be done must be planned in advance. Thing is, same is true with moving out of an apartment. Lots of people don’t bother giving much thought to moving out. They pay their dues, pack their bags, get on a U-Haul moving van and never look back.

But those are the actions of an irresponsible tenant. Unless you want to be branded as an irresponsible tenant, I suggest you follow these tips on how to clean your apartment before moving out.

1. Staples and nails should be removed from the walls
Staples and nails left bolted to the walls and doors is the sign of a disorganized tenant. So make sure you go through the entire apartment and check the walls for such things.

To get rid of marks, use a magic eraser. But make sure to test the magic eraser first as it could sometimes peel the paint right off the wall. You don’t want that happening at all costs, especially before moving out.

2. Wash the kitchen sink
A kitchen sink that smells nice can make a big difference.

Fill the sink up to the top with warm water. Then add some dish detergent to the water and let it sit for half an hour or so. That should get rid of most of the odor from since when you last cleaned it.

3. Clean the cabinets
Still in the kitchen, check the cabinets and make sure they’ve been properly wiped clean of dust and other dirt. Use a multi-purpose cleaning agent and wipe the surface with a clean cloth. Wipe the entire cabinet – inside and outside.

4. Don’t forget the bathroom
The bathroom is one place you definitely want to go over more than once before handing the key back to your landlord.

Check the shower, sink, toilet and tub, and make you remove any build up and wipe the surface of the fixtures clean. Also sweep and mop the entire floor of the bathroom. Do this more than once if necessary.

5. Sweep the bedrooms
Your landlord is definitely going to check each room carefully before signing your release. Take a moist piece of cloth and wipe down the closet shelves and mirrors inside the bedrooms. Again sweep the floor clean and then mop it afterwards. Use oil soap for wooden floors.

If you’re using a carpet, treat any spots using a special detergent. Then vacuum afterwards.

6. Take pictures of the entire apartment
Take a picture of each room, every corner of the entire place. Keep the photos in case the landlord contacts you afterwards claiming you left permanent damages in the apartment. It doesn’t happen very happen but it’s good to know you have something to fall back on just in case.

The important thing is the landlord gives you a favorable recommendation letter for your new apartment. To do this, you need to leave him a good impression of you as a tenant. So make sure to clean the place up before you move out.
