Want to be a doctor? Is it your dream to cure disease, improve lives, save people, or maybe just even make a comfortable living in the process? In order become a physician, you can’t just put on a lab coat and go to work – there is a set of steps that must be followed in order to join this prestigious profession. If you have the talent and the heart to accomplish this goal, here is what you need to do:

1) Find the desire – This is the most ambiguous step, but also the most important. In order to be a successful physician, you have to want it really bad. The road to becoming a doctor is too difficult and requires too much sacrifice for people to trek it half heartedly. Future doctors need not only the desire to reach their ultimate goal, but the willingness to put full effort into the steps required to get there. There is a reason that medical school drop out rates typically range anywhere from 10% to 20% – depending on the school.

2) Build up your undergrad – Schooling for future physicians begins long before medical school. In order to even get into medical school, one must excel (to varying degrees) in their undergraduate work. Medical schools are ever increasing their admissions standards, and increasing demand shows that trend becoming even more prevalent in future years – if you are going to gain admittance into the school of your choice, you really need to build your pre-med resume to the greatest degree possible.

3) Nail the MCAT – This is the second most important factor in the pre-med resume. The MCAT is a standardized test that serves as the SAT/ACT for medical schools (it is not just a term thrown around in ‘Meet the Parents’). A high MCAT score combined with a great undergraduate transcript can get you into the best medical school. A high MCAT score combined with a lesser transcript can help cover some of the defects of that undergraduate resume. A low MCAT score means that you better have a terrific undergraduate transcript if you want to be able to go to medical school

4) Go to medical school – At this point, you have met the qualifications and been admitted to medical school. Now it is time to go through the roughest schooling you have ever encountered in your life. Say goodbye to your friends, family, and overall social life and prepare to bury your head in books for the next four years. Also prepare for some astronomical bills that will put you into debt for the majority of the next few decades. Pass your classes and show your abilities as you work your way through your clinicals (an excellent opportunity to actually practice medicine).

5) Join the work force…as a doctor – Send out your resumes or go through a match program. Find the job that best fits you. Append your name to include the Dr. and M.D. You have done it.

It is just that simple – only not at all simple.
