How to Get Rid of Clutter

Clutter is a common but clearly a major obstacle to a clean and organized home. Once the house gets too cluttered, cleaning activities such as dusting and vacuuming becomes more difficult. Living in clutter can be overwhelming, but to get rid of clutter from the house is not an impossible feat.

Start of by identifying where the clutter is and what type of clutter has taken hold. The most common type of clutter is due to papers. The mail, newspapers, and school projects brought home are some of the usual culprits. Get rid of clutter by taking the time to go through the mail as you get it. A trash can near the door is useful so that junk mail can be discarded immediately. Organize clutter by having proper places for every type of paperwork found in the home. For example, keep separate files for bills and personal documents.

When trying to organize clutter, there are a few other things that are effective. Be brutal when it comes to evaluating whether or not the item should be kept or thrown away. A good rule to follow is that if you have not used something in six months, then you most likely are not going to use it again. Consider selling it away or giving it to a charity to rid clutter.

If the item is used infrequently, then place them in plastic bins and store them in an unobtrusive place such as the attic or basement. Consider investing in storage bins that can be stacked on top of each other. If the drawers are clear, you can see what is inside them so it is easy to find the items that are needed.

Another way to get rid of clutter in the home is to periodically inspect the items. If something is broken or damaged, throw it out immediately. Most people may make plans to fix broken items, but this usually does not happen. It is sometimes more efficient and inexpensive to simply buy a replacement rather than investing time and effort on an item that has lived past its prime.

It is important to note that getting rid of clutter is not just the job of one person. In fact, the entire family should get involved in order for it to be effectively eliminated. Organize clutter by involving the rest of the family into the task. For younger children, make a game out of it to make it enjoyable. For example, have one child pick up all the red clutter while another cleans up the blue items. Families should also have seasonal garage or yard sales to rid clutter permanently. Then there is Ebay.

Instill the habit of picking up at least one item and putting it back into its proper place each time a person leaves the room. Although it may seem inconvenient, the habit can eventually be picked up and lead to a change in lifestyle. It may not seem a lot but small changes such as this can lead to a clutter free home.
