Nopalea Goes Global

Although Nopalea Juice has only been on the market for a year and a half, it is already becoming a global phenomenon. According to TriVita, which makes the juice, more than 1.7 million bottles of the wonder juice have been sold.

TriVita calls its juice, the “natural anti-inflammatory drink.”
In conjunction with its announcement about the high sales, the TriVita company also stated there have been “reports of improvements in inflammation-related conditions such as joint pain, body pain, skin conditions, breathing difficulties and more have come in from across North America.”

Nopalea Juice is made from the Prickly Pear Cactus. Since the time of the Aztecs — hundreds of years ago, the Nopal cactus has called the Mexican Sonoran desert its home. It is believed the Aztecs grew the plant and then ate it as a food and used it as a medicine, as well. Now the plants grows across North American and even has been transplanted and grown and harvested around the world.

Nopalea juice is made from the prickly pear cactus. It is squeezed form the pulp of this wonder cactus, also known as the Opuntia and the Nopal cactus. People still eat the pads of the plant as a vegetable and eat the flowers, as well.

Colorful red, purple or yellow blossoms burst forth on the plant and are delicious. The big cactus can reach up to 20 feet high. The prickly pear cactus is not seen as an antioxidant rich plant which also contains special anti-inflammatory properties. The cactus, like the beet, is one of only a few plants containing a special wonder pigment called betalains, that work to fight inflammation and are natural antioxidants.

According to TriVita, betalains are “rare, natural antioxidants that are found in only a few of the world’s plants including the fruit of the Nopal cactus, Swiss chard, beets, and some weeds and fungi.”

Betalains are believed to help cleanse and help the body naturally detoxify. Drinking juice from the cactus helps to reduce now only blood sugar levels (as Dr. Oz shared on one of his shows), but is also believed to help lower cholesterol.

It’s been called the Party Cactus. Dr.Oz also mentioned how it helps with hangovers. This might be because juice from its extracts is believed to nearly magically banish the symptoms of overindulgence of cocktails, beer and wine.

During one of his shows, Oz said he would send over some of the prickly pear cactus to Jimmy Fallon, the comedian, to help with hangovers. During his show about the seven natural wonders of the world, Oz listed the prickly pear cactus as one of the wonders. He even did a demonstration on the show that illustrated how the prickly pear cactus fibrous nature soaked up sugar in the body and helped regulate how the sugar entered the bloostream, which could reduce the incidence of diabetes.

Scientists working in San Francisco, at the University of California looked at how the prickly pear cactus could help with hangovers. They had people ingest the plant at least five hours before they drank. What they found was that the plant reduced some of the pain of hangovers, such as headache and nauseau. Researchers in New Orleans, at Tulane University, discovered the same results from similar research.

TriVita launched the Nopalea Juice drink in June 2009 and it has become a best selling product around the world, according to a press release from the company this month.
