Soaring on Your Strengths Lands the BIG Job

My career counseling client Sally was a Chief Financial Officer who wanted to become the Chief Executive Officer of the company. Her big chance was recognize when her boss decided to retire; however, he did not support her goal of getting the CEO position. Her only chance to land this job without his support was only with a carefully developed personal brand. She needed to define Brand Sally which makes her skill, strengths, and abilities more evident, in order for the Board of Directors to view her as the prime candidate. However, an intimidating roadblock was her boss’s lack of endorsement.

When trying to identify your personal brand, you need to try to quickly name your key strengths and your career identity. No, it is not your job title, but rather your career identity. It is your career identity that is a unique authentic reputation which you have among bosses, colleagues, and other employees. This reputation is what we call Brand You.

As a job seeker, you may not be familiar with the term personal branding. In addition, it is not an easy task to teach someone about self-marketing their personal brand in order to succeed in your career. You should remember that career identity is not only a piece of advertising, but Brand You is based on the unique, authentic, talented, and special person that you are. It is the true essence of you as a person which forms the components of Brand You, and it includes: you work strength, your image, your passion, and your personality traits, along with the perception of other people of you, applied in a work-environment that enhances your productivity.

My advice to all job seekers, who care about their career advancement, is to give them a gift. It does not matter in what stage you are in of your career; whether it is the beginning, middle or at a senior level. If you are changing careers or reinventing yourself, it will allow you to have a game plan for your future. It will help you to know how to self-upgrade and market yourself fruitfully to become the very best that you can ever be.
