Constructing a Scaled Down Media Center for the Bathroom
With so much new technology, it is no wonder that many homeowners are now opting to include their favorite media components in their bathrooms. There is a growing interest in creating a scaled down version of a media center in the bathroom, whether you want to catch the morning news or relax to new wave tunes while you bathe. If you want to add a little bit of media to your master bathroom, check out the tips and tricks below to get you started. There are definite pitfalls and concerns to watch out for.
Bathroom Concerns
A bathroom is a place that only recently has become of interest to media center installers. With limited space, it can be challenging to incorporate the things you would like to see in such a space. Even more concerning is the moisture ridden environment that can quickly do irrevocable damage to sensitive electronic equipment. How, then, do you create a media center that is both effective and long lasting? One of the main tricks is to make sure that the room is adequately ventilated. A steamy shower should be met head on with a high power, low noise exhaust fan. That extra moisture in the air needs to be whisked out of the room quickly and efficiently. Not only will this help reduce mold and mildew build-up, but it will also prevent moisture from getting into your electronics. Before you even consider adding any type of media equipment to the bathroom, make sure that the room is very well ventilated.
Types of Equipment to Include
After the room has been ventilated, start thinking about what you would like to include in the bathroom\’s scaled down media center. Some good starting points are a small television with a built in DVD player and a docking station with external speakers for your mP3 player. This simple combination gives you the ability to watch television, view a movie and listen to your favorite songs. If your home is served by cable service instead of satellite, you will need to have a cable wire run to the bathroom to service the television.
Where to Put It
Another tricky decision is where to put the electronic equipment. Ideally, a small media hutch will be used. This allows you to close the doors to protect the equipment when not in use, and keeps the space tidy. You can even combine the functionality of the hutch to allow for it to hold towels and other bathroom linens. Place the hutch somewhere where it can be seen, but also far enough away from the bathtub, shower, sink and toilet to avoid possible electrocution. All electrical wires should be plugged into a power strip that is turned off when the equipment is not being used. A great feature to include in the hutch is a swivel stand for the television. This allows you to adjust the angle for better viewing. Or mount a flat screen TV on a convenient area of the wall.
