Liposuction, like any other surgery, can have complications associated with it. Even patients who go to the best trained and most experienced surgeons sometimes experience complications. If you have are planning on having this procedure and have already spoke to your surgeon then they probably went over the possible complications that you could experience, but here are some reminders of what to look for after you’ve had those stubborn fat deposits removed.

Swelling & Bruising

You will experience some swelling. This is a normal result of almost any surgery, especially liposuction’s rapid removal of so much fatty tissue. Give your body time to heal and recover. Try gently massage around the swollen areas. Massage will encourage excess fluids to drain from the affected area. Also be aware that some bruising is also normal, but it will go away with time. You can not do much to relieve the bruising. Ice may help some, but time is the only sure cure.

Pain, Numbness & Muscle Spasms

Don\’t be surprised by mild to moderate levels of pain at times. You may even experience some numbness in areas near where the procedure was performed. Muscle spasms and wrinkles are also reported by some people. Warm presses and gentle massage will help relieve the spasms, but only time and muscle toning can remove skin wrinkles.

Blood Clotting

Blood clots can be very serious and this risk is one reason why candidates for liposuction should be carefully screened before surgery. Before surgery, be absolutely certain to tell your doctor your entire medical history. Leave nothing out! You want to make sure that you are an ideal candidate for the procedure before having the surgery. All surgery is traumatic and can produce blood clots. If you have liposuction and a blood clot goes to your lungs, it can be fatal. The risk is much higher in seriously obese persons, but the risk is present for all people–particularly those who completely avoid exercise after the surgery. Be sure to move around every day to ensure proper blood flow.

Infection

Any open wound in the body carries some risk of infection. If your incision becomes enflamed, consult your doctor immediately. Untreated infections can spread and possibly even be deadly if left untreated.

Surgical Error

On some rare occasions, a surgeon may accidentally puncture a vital organ. Keep in mind that liposuction surgery requires the doctor to use a long probe to suck out the fat. Sometimes surgeons can inadvertently hit organs and cause significant damage. If after your surgery you experience deep interior pain, consult your doctor right away. You may need corrective surgery to fix the affected organ.

Skin Death

This condition, technically known as skin necrosis, refers to the process of the skin cells dying around the new wound created during the surgery. If the surgery utensils are not properly and entirely sterile, bacteria can enter the wound and grow causing infection. Choosing a highly qualified board certified doctor will really lower your risk of anything like this ever happening to you.
