The Not So Humble Beginnings of the Frozen Margarita

For those who are margarita lovers, you probably know just where to locate a great margarita! You might even know how to make margaritas. But have you learned just where and when your favorite frozen imbibement was first concocted?

The frozen margarita is absolutely one among Mexico\’s most prized contributions to the world! No other beverage inspires such vibrant images of sun-drenched tropical beaches, lively mariachi tunes, tiki hut bars and that inviting first gulp! This drink has even been immortalized in Jimmy Buffett\’s most well-known tune, \”Margaritaville,\” and will perpetually be associated with the expression \”that frozen concoction\” and the recurring mantra, \”salt, salt, salt!\”

Whereas there are a lot of variations of normal and frozen margarita recipe, the basic remains nearly every margarita lovers\’ favorite: your favorite brand of tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice (preferably from Mexican or Florida limes), Triple Sec (or the costlier Cointreau), and ice…. all poured into in margarita glasses whose rims were lovingly coated with salt.

And so what is the precise birthplace of today\’s adored frozen margarita recipe? Something as fashionable and near perfect as the frozen margarita is sure to draw a lot of individuals asking for acknowledgment for its creation.

One very popular tale is that the first margarita was invented way back in the Thirties in Tijuana, at the restaurant owned by Carlos \”Danny\” Herrera named Rancho La Gloria. As is commonly the situation with new cocktails, the original plan was to cover up the harsh taste and burn of the alcohol, in this instance, tequila. While her claim is considerably later than Herrera\’s, it\’s nonetheless accepted by many – presumably because one of her visitors, hotelier Tommy Hilton, started offering the drink at his chain of hotels, which undoubtedly added to its popularity.

But that\’s not the end of the story. Ever heard of (or drank) Jose Cuervo tequila? Of course you have – if you\’ve ever ordered a margarita at most bars in America (and eastern Mexico). The spirit\’s first U.S. importer, Anthony Dias Blue, is recognized with writing the advertising tagline, \”Margarita: it\’s more than a girl\’s name,\” back in the mid-1940s…several years earlier than the Sames vacation bash.

But the frozen margarita recipe would not come into its full glory till 1971 (six short years before the release of \”Margaritaville\” – chance?), when the world\’s first frozen margarita machine was created by Mariano Martinez, a Dallas restaurateur.

Ultimately, does it really matter? So long as you have got a blender or a margarita machine, an excellent frozen margarita recipe, and the right state of mind, the home of the margarita is wherever you\’re having fun with one!
