Building a Pond is No Fun

Yes, why not build a pond in your garden? It would definitely brings a new face to your new Eden and a new home to your fish in mind, an added attraction that would make your day complete after a hard day’s work on the garden. But building a pond is not fun time as it would require a lot of hard work and patience. You have to get up early and start the day with your shovel in hand and dig the dirt of the earth. However, before rushing with your shovel, get your pen and paper and start the planning first as the pond you intent to build would be a permanent fixture of your area and it would be wise to study it carefully, the location where you intend to put it and the design you want it to be. Consider the following ideas before constructing your pond;

Natural Pond- this would follow the natural curves and forms of your garden and you may include existing stones or rocks in your garden and allow spaces at the edge of the pond to plant your chosen greens that would make an impression that the pond was already there before your house and garden, a semblance of natural existence.

Formal Pond – This is usually in square or rectangular shape and symmetrical in design and normally have concreted edges and the plants are chosen to match the artistic design of the pond unlike the natural pond where the plantings are wilder. Normally the design comes hand in hand with the house design nearby to give an aura of augmentation between the two structures.

Raised Pond – Usually a formal pond is constructed above natural ground level and could be raised using bricks, blocks or stones and involves a lot of cost in construction materials in building it as compared to ponds at ground level where your cost involve is the disposal of excess waste only. However, the cost difference would be insignificant when compared on the result of the pond which is raised after its completion, the beauty and its functionality would be much appreciated.

After completing your sketch plans for the pond, you have to spend some few hours determining the proper location of the pond in accordance with your purpose for the pond as to sunlight requirement, like for example if you are planning to put water lilies, your pond must be on direct sunlight for four to six hours daily to make them thrive or if for fish only, a shady location would perfectly suit your fish. Study those trees that would protrude your pond as their leaves could be sources of pollution and would create a lot of waste on your pond later on.

Be sure not to locate your pond on the lowest part of your garden as this location is susceptible to flooding during heavy rains and will definitely collect the runoff from the garden that could carry fertilizer and pesticide residues that may kill your fish in the pond, if they were still there after the flood.
