How to Protect Those Amazing Eyes
Carrots, grapes, and fish sound like a terrible dinner nightmare, but guess what. These three foods are particularly good for your eyesight. Anything that is good for you is good for your eyesight but these foods, among others are great at eye disease prevention and oily fish, like herring, actually slows down eye degeneration in people who already have it. There are a few other steps to keep those baby blues working and staying strong. Read on and find out how to take care of your eyesight.
– Make it Annual
Those of us who have passed the halfway mark to 100 know how important an annual; if not semi-annual physical is to our health and well-being. What many of us neglect is a yearly trip to the eye doctor as well. No matter what age you are, or how good your eyesight happens to be, you should visit with an ophthalmologist at least once per year. When it is your eyesight at stake, anything that can be caught early is good news for the ability to treat it. Other steps you can take are,
– Stay out of the sun
UV rays are not just bad for your skin; it can wreak havoc with your eyesight. Staring into the glare on the bumper in front of you every day for years as you drive to and from work will eventually damage your sensitive retina. You may not notice it at first, but eventually, that white patch in the middle of your vision will begin to come and go. When this happens, it is a sign that you should have seen your eye doctor a long time ago. Wear sunglasses outdoors only and during the day. Why put any more stress on your eyes than you already have.
– Mini Vacations
If you do nothing but stare at a computer screen all day long, day in and day out, like me, it is time to start taking mini vacations. Tired worn out eyes can lead to migraines of the worst sort. So how do you take mini vacations? It is easy. Every now and then, look up, and focus on items that are far away. If you do not have a window to look out, pick something colorful across the room. Another trick is to close your eyes for a minute every so often. This mini rest will help stave off tension headaches and make you feel a little better at the end of the day.
– Wear Protection
Sunglasses are great for sun, but they will not protect you flying shrapnel. If you work with tools, wear protective safety glasses. Your eyesight is too valuable to risk. One of the most common eye injures occurs at the end of November through early January. More people scratch their corneas putting up and taking down the Christmas tree than any other eye injury. Make your Christmas much merrier and put on safety glasses when putting up your Christmas tree.
I Love You
We have to look out for each other. If your spouse had heart trouble, would you get a CPR certification? Of course, you would. The next time he or she is doing something that could cause an eye injury, make sure they wear protection. Make them go to the eye doctor once a year. It is the best way to say, I love you.
