Stress is a killer. It can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. That is a fact. Unfortunately, many people deal with stress by relying on alcohol and drugs, which just add to their problems and health issues. If you don’t learn to manage stress in a less detrimental way soon, you may not have a life to worry about.
Finding relief from stress is as important as eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and keeping your weight under control. There are many ways to reduce stress.
Some people find exercise works well, others take a hot bath with scented oil. A power nap in the middle of the day can really make a difference, too. Many people are turning to Yoga to obtain stress relief. Yoga can provide increased strength and endurance, along with the inner peace we crave.
While it is certainly advisable that you attend Yoga classes to get started, since you need to make sure you are learning the poses absolutely correctly to avoid injury, eventually Yoga can be practiced at home.
For many people, however, finding room to practice amidst the furniture, dog and cat paraphernalia, and kid’s toys is a challenge to say the least. And then there are the distractions of the phone, door bell, or people coming and going. It can be nearly impossible to concentrate on your poses no matter how hard you try to tune all of those hurdles and interruptions out. That creates more stress!
So, you keep trudging to the local Yoga studio with your mat and tote bag, wishing you could devote more time to actually doing Yoga than commuting back and forth to your destination.
You don’t have to interrupt your family life to have a place for your yoga routine. Although it is probably tempting, kicking everyone out of the house, turning the phone off, and taping a do-not-disturb sign on the front door wouldn’t work anyway. What if you build a quiet sanctuary in your backyard just for a private retreat?
Close your eyes and imagine this sanctuary. The interior could be like stepping into a world of peace, quiet and harmony. With a stereo to play soothing music you could set the mood.
Think of the interior painted a soft, relaxing color, tapestries on the wall, plants in the windows. Think of candles on shelves, incense burning, a table top water fountain adding serenity to the scene.
For this you are going to need a small permanent structure. It will have to be attached to the ground and insulated. If you already have a storage shed, you may consider converting it into your yoga sanctuary.
Or just build one in the style of a shed, with a roof and walls. The building could be unobtrusive, and attractive. The landscaping surrounding it is inviting and nurturing.
Not only do you now have a perfect spot for your yoga workout, but now you have a place to go and unwind after a hectic day. In fact, this could be just what everyone in the family needs. Just make sure that you get first choice on when the sanctuary is for you and you alone.
