How to Audition For a TV Commercial
Most television advertisements use people to convey their messages. This is mainly because the audience easily identifies with people more than it does with other characters such as cartoons. As you plan to audition for a TV commercial, have in mind that you will be expected to market the brand in such a way that as many people as possible will be interested in watching the advert; and also buy the product. The following are some tips that can help as you prepare to audition for a TV commercial:
1) Join an existing union. This is a group of people with similar interests in the field. Most TV commercial companies pay union members better than individuals. Competition is very stiff here and the saying unity is strength applies in this profession.
2) Get acquainted with the product. Do your research and know as much content as possible about the product. The panel may ask you a question or two about the product and you are required to answer promptly; scratching your head and remaining quiet are not the best was you want to reply.
3) Be positive and develop a likeable personality. TV adverts are usually short and they don’t require follow ups. One good video would be the one to be repeated over and over again. This gives you the room to fake; so even if you are a gloomy kind of person a two minutes session of faking a smile will work well for you. Just make sure you know how to do it.
4) Be consistent. It is not a must that your first shot will pass through but you should never give up on trying. Remember that everyone at the auditions is given equal opportunity; and what separates winners from losers is their level of persistence.
5) Be creative. If there are no clear instructions to follow, don’t wait to be told what to do. For example, if the role you’ll be representing is that of a pirate come to the auditions fully dressed like a pirate. This shows that you are enthusiastic with the role you’re playing and the TV commercial panel likes that.
6) Study the storyboard. This is an artists’ impression of how the perfect audition should be conducted. It involves factors like the actor’s appearance and attitude towards the product, his/her posture; and if necessary how the product should be held. If you don’t follow the storyboard’s instructions you may end up doing the wrong thing.
7) Check on your reading speed. Don’t be too fast as the audience needs time to grasp your message. On the other hand a slurry speech makes you look lazy and boring. The best thing is to strike a balance between the two.
Moreover, try holding the product near your face and smile. An occasional nodding of the head also gives assurance to the viewer that you believe in the product. In conclusion, always keep your eyes on the camera until the show is closed.
