From the 18th century till the 19th century they invented and used more guns that were quite similar to the original Ribaulequin. One was called “Ducks-foot.” It was a handheld gun with four barrels. The barrels shot .45 calibers.
The gun had been designed in a way that it could shoot more than one person at a time. This gun became very popular with prison warders, sea captains and bank security.

During the Napoleonic Wars the Navy also made use of these “Ducks-foot” guns, although it was a slightly different version. A man called Henry Nock created this model, instead of four barrels it had seven, and they shot .50 calibers instead of .45. The barrels were able to shoot at the same time, but the gun backfired a lot, so it was difficult to wield.

Origen Vandenburgh designed a new type of volley gun in 1860. It was almost as big as a cannon. Vandenburgh was part of the New York military, so he created it to be used by the military. The type of gun he designed was powerful and had 85 barrels. He first tried to sell the guns design to the English Navy. But they were uninterested. There were rumors that he did sell a few in the US around the time of the Civil War. But they were never actually used. There is still one model left, and it’s on display in North Carolina at Fort Fisher.

After the volley gun the Gatling gun was invented in 1861. This gun had six barrels which could shoot at the same time. But it did require one man to load it. During the Civil War this model was utilized by Union Army. The United States army also used it in their war against Spain. A man called Richard Gatling created this gun. He had the hope it would mean that less men would need to fight on the battle field, which would help fewer men to be injured and eventually strengthen the army.

These days there are still types of volley guns being used. The Spanish Navy for example, has the Meroka CIWS. It has twelve barrels and they are designed to shoot in a wide area. It’s a modern technique of firing. It used radar to aim, but the gun still doesn’t work automatically. It will fire one bullet from each of the twelve barrels but then it has to be loaded manually. The Spanish use this gun during attacks at sea and in the air.

Volley guns have always been around in some shape or form. They have always had pros and cons. While they still use this type of weapon in this day and age, there aren’t very many compared to the amount there used to be.
