Understanding Dog Fights – Can You Avoid Them?
Dog owners with multiple dogs are well aware of the fact there are dog fights from time to time and sometimes very often. It has been observed that dog fights happen at one moment and the same two become affectionate the very next moment.
You might not always understand why they are fighting. However dogs have reasons for fighting like human beings have. There are some obvious reasons for dog fights, you can try to resolve these before they get out of control:
Fighting For Their Space
Most dog fights are related to their space, they do not like that some other dog has entered their territory. Dogs can be quite possessive about their territories.
If you bring a new dog into your home it is very important that you take some time to slowly introduce them to each other or have different places for them in your home in the beginning. Keep in mind they do not always become instant pals and there may be a few dog fights before they do.
Social Order or Status
If you have two or more dogs, you might notice that the males get into more dog fights over social status. One thinks that he is better than the other. It is very difficult to avoid these types of fights.
It is recommended not to prefer one over the other and love and care must be given evenly between them. You may notice that they growl and snap at each other. It is recommended to stay away from an all out fight and keep distance. Although a harsh warning to both in the beginning may put a stop to it.
Aggressive Behavior
It has been noted that some fight over many issues out of aggression. They may get aggressive for various reasons. Indoors dogs sometimes feel frustrated because they want to go out.
If a dog stays indoors for a long time, they can get aggressive and fight with other dogs in the house. You can prevent this by allowing them to go out, take them for walks or allow them to run at a dog park or other protected area so they can enjoy their freedom.
Some may fight over foods, if this is the case you may have to change how, when and where you feed. Other issues may even occur during playtime, if they get overly excited end it quickly and choose a different activity. Sometimes, it will be difficult for you to recognize if they are fighting with each other or having good times with each other.
Stopping Dog Fights
If you want to stop them from fighting, you have to do it very carefully as they may harm you if you interfere. They can and often do bite even you, do not punish them for this because unlike human beings, they are not able to understand fighting. You should not interfere unless it is required.
It is far safer to prevent dog fights than to break one up. You have to find out the reason if you notice one has started fighting with other dogs more often, there may be some health issue. Check with your vet, this way you may find an underlying cause that will help them and resolve the issue they might have.
Conclusion
Dog fights can be extremely serious. Dogs have their own special issues, health problems, mood swings, likes and dislikes just as we human beings do. It\’s up to us to provide them support in their tough times. Like human beings, they also need love and care and you will receive their faith, loyalty and love in return.
