Infographics Without Graphics

Internet shortened the attention span of people. It shortened everything. No one even uses long words anymore. If they are long they shorten it like the transformation (now that word was long) of web log into blog. However we, human race, are insatiable. To be able to fit our URL’s into 140 characters we even started to use URL shorteners. Another new word that entered our vocabulary is “infographics”. This long word is in fact the shortened version of information graphics. This infographics without graphics (I really don’t know why I don’t just say information or shortly info, it may be for the sake of literature) is dedicated to the entire world from an NYC SEO.

In 2011 the marketing budget allocated to magazine and newspaper advertising along with radio spots is decreased 35%.
Only 42% of internet users click the first link on their search results.
62% of people click a link on the first page of the search results.
Windows XP is still the most preferred operating system.
Symbian OS is the most used operating system for mobile Internet browsing.
SEO budgets of companies from UK and US will increase 4 fold in the next 2 years.
There are more than 255 million web sites in the world.
2 billion people use the Internet.
Nobody knows the exact number of domestic cats living in the world.

That last one was to make sure you were reading. These were all numbers most of which are significant only for some professionals. It takes about 15 seconds for a normal person to forget the last number he or she reads. However when they are supported by graphics they help our time to pass more enjoyable. Infographics are like soap bubbles. We enjoy them as we read and look at the pictures and once we are through, they don’t leave a trace. I had a friend in collage. He used to say “I don’t look at the pictures, I read the articles” when asked about certain magazines he kept under his bed. We are all just the opposite of him. We don’t read; we just check out the pictures. They say SEO is spoiling the Internet. SEO is just a tool in the hands of people. Can we hang the tool for what people do with it? Look at any Internet marketing text you find. They all agree on the same thing. People don’t read the content on the web sites they just browse. Internet Explorer or Firefox are not internet readers. They are just browsers. In fact there isn’t a concept called Internet reader.

In the press releases of search engines they say that they want to make the Internet a better media. For whom? Future generations? Our attention span is half of our parents’. How short will theirs be? There is a movie called Idiocracy. It is set in far future but I don’t think the future they envisioned is that far. 500 years is far too long for our attention spans to endure. Watch that movie and remember that an NYC SEO is warning you.
