Discover HIIT Training

There has been a lot of speculation going around lately about HIIT, which is also known as High Intensity Interval Training. First of all, HIIT refers to little spurts of continuous high and low intensity cardiovascular exercise that gets done for specific intervals of time. The whole training session will generally last less than 20 minutes.

A workout example would be to begin by warming up for 3-4 minutes. You would follow up the warm up by sprinting hard for 30 seconds at the very fastest level you could achieve, followed by 60-90 seconds of walking or light jogging in order to recover. This would be referred to as the interval. You would repeat the interval roughly 6-10 times, depending upon your own fitness level. You would then complete the workout with a cool down for 3-4 minutes.

Research has shown that this program has benefits which last much longer than most other cardio workouts today, and this includes long distance sprinting. One study even found that 2.5 hours of rigorous HIIT training will offer the same benefits as 10.5 hours of long distance training.

This type of training will enhance your metabolism significantly. When compared to doing cardio at a steady pace, you would burn more body fat during one of these sessions, and would continue to burn fat for up to 24 hours following your workout. One of the greatest benefits of this program is that your workouts are still benefitting you even when you are watching television five hours later!

You can also significantly improve your endurance and stamina with one of these workouts. Your VO2 max is the maximum amount of energy that you are able to take in during sports or a session of exercise. These workouts can drastically increase your VO2 peak, which will give you the ability to perform many different types of activities for longer periods of time. If you have a hard time running on the treadmill for more than 5 minutes at a time, then you will see a major improvement once you one of these workouts for a few weeks.

Another great thing about this program is that it breaks the boredom of regular even paced cardio workouts. Many people have a hard time making themselves workout regularly. Once you manage to get to the gym, you have to do things like read a book or listen to music to help those agonizing minutes go by. With this kind of training you will be spending a lot less of your time exercising. Additionally, the different intervals make things a lot more interesting. Also, you always have to push yourself just to make it through the various intervals. The workout is always over before you know it! Once you finish, you are swelling with pride at the fact that you have completed the same type of workout that professional athletes do. Not to mention the fact that your body loves you for it!

No matter what your purpose is for wanting to workout, HIIT training can no doubt be exactly the type of workout that will help you achieve your goals!
