The Top Three Reasons Restaurants Fail and How to Avoid (Or Fix) Them

We have all seen it. Sometimes it happens so fast that we do not even take notice and forget in a day or two. It is especially sad if it is a restaurant that we hoped would appear close by. We are talking about the mysterious disappearing restaurant. Most of us have seen a new restaurant appear and thought that we should stop in and try them. Then one day not long after we find that we have missed the opportunity. There are many reasons for a restaurant to fail. The top three are as follows:

– Business Mismanagement
– Customer Service Issues
– Poor Food Quality.

Beware Of Icebergs

If even one of these occurs, a business can sink faster than the Titanic. There are obvious ways to prevent this from happening and if a restaurant fails because of one or more of these issues, it is probably due to new ownership. Often, someone who is new to the restaurant business will be unable to find a way to recover from their problem fast enough to stop the domino effect that heralds the end game or regain a customer base after reputation damage has been done. We do not all have the kind of recovery money that Domino’s Pizza or KFC has. Although, we can be grateful as they both have excellent products and would be sorely missed.

Managing The Storm

A poorly managed restaurant business is difficult to recover from simply because the owner is not likely to become a better business manager overnight. In fact, if the restaurant is mismanaged to the point that it is necessary, it is not likely to recover regardless. However, if there is money for recovery, the hiring of a good manager with a business degree and some experience is possible. The restaurant might even take on an active partner. In either scenario, as long as there is money enough to whether the storm, a restaurant with potential can recover. Restaurant inventory is the area that suffers the most from mismanagement.

Eat The Friendly Skies

Customer services issues is another area that is extremely difficult to recover from quickly without restaurant relocation simply because a customer who is put off by poor customer service will likely not return. This is why it is so very important to catch and correct this kind of problem immediately, before too much damage can be done. If you have a poor work pool in the area you are in, you may have to start a campaign to hire away from other restaurants, which cost more but is worth it in the end. Word of mouth can kill a restaurant in its own community. Most people will not give a restaurant a second chance if they feel they have been slighted or taken advantage of in any way. Think about the last time you were treated poorly. Did you ever return to that establishment by choice?

Does This Taste Funny To You

Poor food quality is a problem that should never have occurred in the first place. You can write on a marquee that you have new management. You can write on a marquee that you have new customer friendly wait staff. You cannot write that you have a new cook or that your food has improved. It simply does not work that way. You have to know what your cook is capable of before you hire them. If you have made a terrible mistake by hiring him or her, you must know this within days or you will lose every person who walks through the door. As mentioned before, it is very difficult to convince people to come back. A fast way to find a replacement is to hire a cooking student and work with them through graduation.
