What is Deep Tissue Massage?

If you happened to be in a stressful situation lately and you feel like you need a good massage therapy to relieve the stress as well as the body pain, try a deep tissue massage. It is a type of massage therapy that is commonly used on most massage spas as it is commonly requested by the patients as it helps a lot in relaxing tensed muscle as well as calming down of the whole body. Deep tissue massage focuses on certain areas of the patient’s body to address chronic pain which is common on athletes and individuals with hectic and fast-moving lifestyles.

Deep tissue massage focuses mainly on the deeper layers of muscles on the body of the patient that is why it specifically targets body pain in the specific areas. The massage therapist takes the liberty of using oil, cream or lotion on the preferred area of the body that suffers from persistent pain as lubricant for an easier manipulation of his or her forearms and elbows to get to the deep muscle tissues. However, unlike massaging the other parts of the human body, working on the deep muscle tissue needs to be done slowly. Sometimes, the massage therapist uses the aid of tools to get to these areas of the body.

This type of massage therapy’s main goal is to unclog the resistance in the muscle tissue of the specific area which causes the chronic pain due to the blocking up of the circulation and lymph flow to that area of the patient’s body. Continuous massage therapy on that area removes or breaks up any adhesions on that area that sticks together and form tough bands of muscle tissues resulting in stiffening of the body.

The benefits a patient can get from a deep tissue massage are:

Back Pain relief – like all massage therapy, this is a common known benefit after the therapy, however deep tissue massage does this best as it is developed for this type of job. It is known as a body pain buster that is why many athletes and outgoing individuals prefer this type of massage therapy over the others. The back pain is perhaps one of the most common types of body pain as our back supports most of our upper body weight which in return takes up most of the load that is why it ends up in pain.

Chronic pain relief – stopping chronic pain from coming back over and over again is what makes this type of massage therapy popular among many patients. Although most massage therapy can handle body pain, deep tissue massage stops it from making your body uncomfortable.

Release muscle tension – because it works within the deep muscle tissues of the body, muscle tensions can be addressed and targeted very well by the massage therapist. Rigid formations on the muscle areas can block the circulation and stiffen the muscles giving it muscle cramps, spasms, and sometimes sprain. Deep tissue massage stimulates those tough muscles and soften them for a relax muscle.
