The History of Reflexology
Reflexology is a popular natural healing technique that uses both the hands and feet as controllers in manipulating and enhancing the overall health of the human body. Like robots, our bodies have certain key areas that act as controllers responsible for the good condition of the whole body. This is done by applying different pressure on certain vital areas of the hands and feet that covers the corresponding body parts. These are called reflex areas which are essential in improving the condition and boosting the healing ability of the body. Reflexology is now a famous and well-celebrated leisure enjoyed by many people which is not only limited to individuals with physical problems as it is now a regular service offered by massage spas all around the world.
In Ancient Egypt, the use of reflexology can be traced back as early as 2330 BC. Archeological findings through wall paintings prove the application of this alternative medicine on patients by massage therapist known as physicians during that time. Several wall paintings tell of the event where the physician treats the patients by working on their hands and feet. Most of these early pictures of natural treatment have founded the idea of the effectiveness of reflexology as an alternative and complementary medicine.
Ancient Greece also became a part of the world where reflexology was used as a form of natural medicine and regular health care. Ancient spas include reflexology as their alternative medicine in relaxing and relieving pain. Reflexology and other form of natural healing were incorporated by ancient Greeks to improve health and foresight.
Ancient China is also a place where reflexology methods and techniques were cultivated. Ancient reflexology in China can be traced during the time where a certain individual known as Yu Fu was healing his patients without any medium such as herbal medicines, acupuncture or other Chinese medicines. The sole use of therapeutic massage at that time was not a common practice especially the reflexology style where the said physician got his name from. His Chinese name is Yu which means healing, and Fu which means foot dorsum. Yu Fu was successful in treating his patients by targeting the reflex areas of the corresponding body parts that needs to be improved and worked with. Most of the patients were healed as their body responded well on the massage therapy done by the physician.
Europe has its famous reflexology method known as the Zone Reflexology. This method of reflexology was Dr. William H. Fritzgerald’s idea during his time and was later on developed by Eunice Ingham which became the basis of modern day reflexology methods. This paved the way of reflexology to be a part of our regular medical care and for everyone to enjoy.
Reflexology aims in relieving stress out of the human body as well as reducing or totally removing body pain. This is done by calming the body through working on releasing muscle tension. Reflexology improves the condition of the body by increasing the circulation and helps in enhancing the movement and flexibility of the different parts of the body.
