How To Become A Fashion Designer
Fashion designing sounds like a very good career, and an exciting one too! Becoming a fashion designer is a dream for a lot of people. If you are one of them, you need to start by knowing which path to take in order to become a one.
First and foremost, you need to know what kind of stuff you want to design. There are different kinds of designers. There’s the kind that designs clothes, there’s one that designs shoes and there’s also the kind that designs bags. There are even people who specialize in designing neck ties. It is important for you to know which of these you’d like to design as this will help you determine which path to follow.
If you are not that good in drawing yet, you might want to take up a class for it. This will allow you to express your designs in papers, which is what designers commonly do before they turn their creation into life. A drawing and sketching class will teach you how fabrics flow, and how you can draw them in such a way that you get to express what you are thinking.
It is very important that you stay up on the latest fashion trends. Look at new magazines, and study what the models are wearing. You can also check websites so you’ll know what colors are in and which ones are out. This allows you to pattern your designs on the latest trends and prevent you from making the mistake of going back to the past, fashion-wise. Of course, never ever copy other designers’ works. You can get inspiration from them, but never ever copy.
Of course, it is important that you get professional training if you are serious about pursuing fashion designing as a career. A lot of good schools offer fashion designing courses, and you are likely to take classes covering Art and Fashion History, Color and Design Theory, Pattern Making, Portfolio Preparation, Costume Design, Principle of Design and Sewing and Garment Construction – just to name a few.
You also need to seek internship. Some schools offer support so that their students can get internships at great places such as Paris or New York. It’s best that you talk to teacher or instructor about this.
Once you graduate, it’s important that you have a resume and a portfolio ready. Your portfolio should be impressive, so make sure that it contains nothing but your best work. This allows you to easily show your work to interviewers when applying for a job.
Hundreds and thousands of people around the world wants to be a fashion designer, and it’s safe to say that these people are competition. Set yourself apart by striving hard and getting nothing but the very best fashion design degree from the best schools. With a little determination (okay, and luck) you’d be able to get a job in one of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world. Think Gucci, Armani or maybe Louis Vuitton.
