Car Insurance and Good Driving Habits

Most automobile drivers know this. To drive a car is potentially a lethal occupation. Cars way 2 tons and when combined with velocity pose a great hazard. Good driving habits are thus essential to our safety whether we are on the highway, in a city, or in a town.

A quality driver respects the rules of the road and refrains from impatience, hasty decisions, or operating a car under the influence of mind or reflex altering drugs or alcohol. With the many obstacles, situations, and risks apparent at intersections and on the road, it is essential for drivers to be alert, cautious, and particular, so as not to cause an accident. The Motor Vehicle handbook in most jurisdictions, is simple and free to obtain, and should be studied carefully.

Traffic tickets cost drivers money and are a pain in the neck to handle. If they are given for moving violations and enough are accrued, a license will be permanently affected and car insurance premiums will increase for the driver, per month. This relationship between driver, state, and insurance company is a considerable racket when police officers are sometimes required to pull quotas for tickets and stop good drivers on technicalities.

In most places, moving violations carry the most weight in terms of increasing points accrued on a license. They raise car insurance premiums once given. The most often abused laws are running stop signs, speeding, entering an intersection with oncoming traffic, changing lanes too rapidly, and passing in a no pass zone or on the right hand side. All of these violations can mean an accident and should be avoided.

Most cities mark their streets not only to protect citizens and create safe driving, but to regulate traffic flow at busy intersections. If drivers routinely miss the laws then they are not using the vehicle responsibly and it is incumbent upon officials to crackdown. Once you have a moving violation ticket, your license becomes more suspect, and if you get enough you can have it revoked.

With enough of these bad points on a license, the driver becomes increasingly difficult to insure without great expense. Risks to the insurance companies are, that behind the wheel, the driver will cause or have an accident with great damage. The price is too high when it comes to a potential \’pay out\’, and new premiums reflect that. This is why demographics with a disproportionate number of accidents already pay higher prices than others who reserve more caution.

Auto insurers must protect themselves against unnecessary liability. If a persons\’ record is very poor, then he or she will be a liability to an insurer. Poor motor vehicle handling includes all of the above mentioned, but also poor car maintenance, overcrowded seats, and distractions such as text messaging and eating while behind the wheel.

In order to keep the road safe, and improve our quality of life, both law enforcement and motor vehicle inspection work toward alleviating bad driving. Good driving habits mean a safer citizenship and they mean lower car insurance premiums.
