One of the most lucrative, most respected, and the most important careers that can be entered into is the legal profession. It is the law and the interpretation of it that keeps us civilized and brings order to chaos. If any area of the law is of interest to you, then becoming a judge will most likely be a path you may like to pursue.

The careers in the legal path are many and diverse, and include such things as paralegal, clerking, court guard or court messenger, the lawyer, the file clerk, and finally, the judge.

What does it take to become a judge? How do you arrive at the final destination and become a judge?

For most people the path begins in college when they are given the opportunity to consider law school. The schooling that you will need lasts about four years time, at the end of which you sit for your state bar examination and become licensed to be an attorney in your state of practice.

Your admission to law school depends on several things. You may be in a competitive school where your LSAT scores will be required to be very high, or in an average competition area where they will be required to be standard scores.

Your LSAT test will examine your reading and comprehension, your analytical skills and many other things that are necessary for an attorney who defends or prosecutes others to be able to do. Once you enter the undergraduate program you will typically need about 7 years to finally emerge as a lawyer.

Once you have been accepted into law school, the work begins. There are a great many wonderful schools of law in the United States and there are even accredited online schools where you may study law and still qualify for your state bar examination. Pre-law and law courses are required of every attorney in the United States. In some countries there are other requirements.

Having practiced law for several years, you may be given the opportunity to become a judge by applying for a judgeship in a local arena. Very often beginning in the local courts is what makes a great judge.

To take your passion for the law a step further, you may want to seek out an appointment to a more advanced position of judgeship. This is typically done by running for the position or by being appointed or elected to the position.

In the beginning you will need some level of political support in order for your judgeship to be given. This is particularly true of state and federal judges. Becoming a judge is quite often a goal that will be many years in the making, one that will be both lucrative and rewarding to the attorney.

There you have it! Your path to Judgeship! It’s a position many desire, but few attain. But don’t let that stop you. Those who work hard and smart do make it. You can be one of them.
