What\’s a Scum Ring? It Ain\’t That Grand!

WARNING!!!

Do not read this if you are eating.

“What’s that oily and yellowish grime on my hot tub? It smells icky and disgusting! And eeerk! It’s so greasy and slimy! Eeerk! Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! What is this thing on my spa?” Honey, this is called as a scum ring. It can also be called as a bath tub ring or a filth line. Yes, this thing is disgusting. You might also ask how and why this scum ring wound up on your spa. Ok, just take a deep breath. Let us try to break it down for you.

A scum ring settling on your hot tub is pretty common. Yes, you read it right. It’s pretty common. Don’t be scared. You are not the only one suffering from the inevitable claws of this grime. I repeat, YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE. But really, what gets it there anyway? Here are a couple of things that causes a scum ring:

– Anti per spirants
– Body oils
– Lotions
– Moisturizers
– Perfumes and colognes
– Hair gels
– All forms and kinds of make up
– Spilled drinks and little food particles
– Dead skin cells (everyone has them dear)
– Sweat, saliva, urine and other body secretions
– Hair
– Soaps and detergents (fro your swim suit or clothes)
– Bath gels and bath salts
– Any chemical build up
– Low sanitizer levels in your hot tub
– Bacteria intensification

Yup. A scum ring is a build up of materials or deposits that came from us humans. Imagine going for a short dive and unknowingly getting a sip of the scum inflicted water. Yes. Please do take a breath. I know that you need it. I would to if I had my own hot tub.

So, what happens if we opt not to clean or immediately clean out the scum ring. Oh my GOD do you really want to know? I’m guessing you do want to know since you are still reading this. Ok, just say the Savior’s name before reading on.

Did you say it? Ok good. Then you are ready. Here’s what happens:

– Immense and intense bacterial growth and reproduction (Just envision them building up a colony inside your spa. This is one community that you just can’t be near to.)
– Genital infection (both in the female and male)
– Bacterial, fungal and viral skin diseases
– Skin, ears, eyes, nails and nose infections and allergies.
– Irritable bowel movement
– Fever due to a deep infection

Ok, you can breathe before we continue. Better yet, say that soothing name again, “JESUS CHRIST…” Although I doubt that you’d be calm at the end of this article. So what should you do? Plain and simple, DO NOT LET THAT SCUM REIGN YOUR PARTY. This just means that you have to regularly balance your spa chemicals and clean or sanitize your hot tub.

You can do it. Think positively. Not being ignorant is key to fully and effectively battle out that yucky and pesky scum ring. Are you ready? Get your gear on!
