What Does the Bible Say About Having Kids After a Miscarriage?

\”For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.\” Romans 8:18 ESV

Miscarriages are particularly tough on the mother. There\’s no more painful experience than carrying a child in your womb for nine months, feeding it with nutrients from your own body, singing it to sleep while stroking the skin of your stomach, only to have a miscarriage or give birth to a stillborn baby. The miscarriage is devastating to the father too, of course, but it\’s the mother that takes the brunt end of the punch. A miscarriage can either make or break a woman\’s spirit.

The emotional trauma involved in miscarriage is one of the reasons why a pregnancy after a miscarriage has become one of the hottest topics of debate for Christian couples. It isn\’t only the emotional attachment of the mother to her unborn child that\’s at stake here – what about God\’s stand on pregnancy after having a miscarriage? When is the right time to try and get pregnant again? What does the Bible say about having kids after such a tragedy?

\”Though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad-in order that God\’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls-\” Romans 9:11 ESV

As the father, it is completely understandable that you\’d want your wife to bear children. But following a miscarriage the situation becomes completely different. First and foremost you need to consider her feelings. Is the pain still fresh in her heart and in her mind? Losing a child that\’s been living inside of you is no trivial thing. You need to make sure your wife is ready to take on the emotional risk of another pregnancy.

Next as the father you need to consider her health. Is her body ready to nurse another child in her womb? You must talk to your family doctor closely about this issue. There are a number of reasons why women experience miscarriages, and make sure these same reasons don\’t spill over to her next pregnancy. If the first miscarriage was due to malnutrition, make sure your wife is healthy and in good shape before you try again.

Lastly consult the Bible as husband and wife who\’s planning to get pregnant again after a miscarriage. You\’ll find there\’s no better place to seek guidance on the matter than God\’s own teachings through quotes and Bible verses. If you prefer, you can consult with your local pastor to help you understand God\’s stand on the matter, and maybe even help you decide how to prepare yourself for the inevitable task of getting pregnant again and bringing a wonderful, healthy child into this world, where this time everything would have a happy ending.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
