Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is another wonderful cigar from the creative team of Don “Pepin” Garcia and his son Jaime. The Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is a departure from the normal Don Pepin cigars which are rich with spice and the heady mixture of earth notes that is a direct descendant of the cigars that Jose “Pepin” Garcia made in Cuba. The name “Baez” was selected from a small town in Cuba from where Jose “Pepin” Garcia was born and acquired his many years of experience in the blending and manufacturing for the cigar industry.

Don “Pepin” Garcia comes from a tobacco making family and first entered the tobacco business when he was only 11 years old. He worked at a cigar factory that belonged to one of his uncles in that same town of Baez. During his long career in Cuba (he left in 2001) he was one of the most honored rollers in the country – a Tabaquero Maestro. The Cuban press compared his agility and hand-eye coordination to that of a magician – and to smoke one of his cigars is indeed magic.

This new blend is a medium-bodied smoke in which an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper was selected as opposed to the Nicaraguan leaf he generally uses. This gives the cigar an excellent aroma and flavor. This is the only cigar that Pepin has created which uses a Connecticut leaf. The filler and binder are all Nicaraguan tobacco. The Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is a bit smoother and more mellow then his other blends. Medium-bodied with notes of coffee, a rich after taste, and a creamy smoke, Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is another phenomenally unique blend stemming from El Rey de los Habanos.

Each cigar, like each bottle of wine, has a personality all its own. Some cigars are night time partiers – strong and bold, able to keep up with single malt scotches, cognacs, reposado tequilas, and aged port. Other cigars beg to be taken outside – to let their rich and fragrant smoke drift across the helm of a 36 foot ketch plying the trade winds along the Spanish Main. Still others are early risers – smooth and creamy they relish the amber splashed dawn and a cup of strong, rich coffee. The Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is one of these beautiful sunrise cigars that make cigar smoking such a joy. You will definitely one to stock this smoke in your humidor.

The Famosos is a Robusto sized cigar (5 inches X 50 ring gauge) The cigar has a beautiful reddish brown luster; it’s very oily and the wrapper leaf is seamless. The draw was perfect – filling my mouth with a rich cloud of smoke. You could taste the cocoa and coffee on the palate and half way down it was espresso and mocha. It just kept getting better and better. The Famosos had a slightly uneven burn but it did not go out or require any touch ups. The ash remained firm with the classic grayish black that is reminiscent of the best Havana has to offer constructed by El Rey de los Habanos (The King of the Cuban Cigars.) A Don Pepin Tabacos Baez is the perfect cigar with my double espresso “black eye” when I’m sitting in my back yard with a temperature of 92oF at nine in the morning overlooking my backyard bay.
