Consider the Effects of Massage Therapy

Throughout the history of man, massage therapy has always been a part of the regular medical care which includes massage, herbalism and many other forms of ancient treatments and medicines. Massage therapy though has been the most popular and commonly used as it both heals and relaxes the human body physically and psychologically at the same time. Most people believe that massage therapy is simply stimulation of the central nervous system and the rubbing of the skin to promote a healthy condition. However, it is more than that as it needs specific and precise targeting of areas that needs to be worked in order to achieve beneficial results and avoid side effects.

Of course, massage therapy like any type of treatment has both risks and negative effects on the patient’s body when done in an improper and incorrect way. There are many risks patients encounter during massage therapy sessions which include skin allergies, bone fractures, body pain and discomfort, and heart problems.

During a massage therapy, massage oil, cream and lotion are among the options a patient can choose to have applied on the skin as lubricant. Among these three, the most commonly used and loved by many patients are the massage oils due to many good reasons. One of the main reasons why they are popular among the patients is because of their natural supplements such as vitamins and minerals which primarily benefit the skin of the patient. However, not everyone benefits from these special oils used for massage as some patients suffer from skin allergies when these oils react with their skin. Acne attack is also one of the side effects of massage oils when applied on the skin as some of these oils are very greasy and can clog the pores which then results to outbreaks. Aside from the reaction of certain massage oils on the skin of a patient, toxins and other waste residues excreted out of the pores also poses threats on the condition of the skin of individuals who have sensitive type of skin. These toxins when not removed quickly from the skin can cause allergic reaction.

Side effects on the skeletal system of the patient are uncommon except for individuals with medical records showing fragile bones. A good massage therapist will not allow a person with this condition to undergo through a massage therapy as it can be dangerous rather than beneficial for the patient.

Body pains and whole body discomfort is a normal after effect of a massage therapy that can somehow be unpleasing and annoying to anyone.

In case a patient has health problems which is shown in his or her medical records, the masseuse should never accept this patient for a therapeutic massage session. The patient will not benefit from the treatment; instead a rise of blood pressure will result in either stroke or heart attack for the patient. For this reason, there’s no chance at all for those who have history of heart attacks, mild and severe strokes, as well as any type of heart problem should pass the screening.
