Touring the Ancient Country of Greece

Driving through history

Greece – the very work evokes memories of Myths, of heroes, of battles fought, of a face that launched a thousand ships. It is a country, home to one of the most sophisticated civilisations of the Pre Christ Era, an archipelago with its countless, clean beaches, with clear, cool water and stretches of shimmering sand! No wonder this country is one of the top tourist destinations in the whole world. History lies hidden in the very stones by the roadsides and the vineyards and olive groves of the country lend to its luscious greenery found only on the mainland. At its zenith, the country of Greece stretched from Egypt to the Hindukush ranges in present day Afghanistan.

The roads of Greece

With such an ancient history written on the sands of time, this country is home to a wide variety of roads. As a member of the European Union, the face of Greece began to brighten up with the many industries like tourism, shipping, transport and communications beginning to look up. Minor skirmishes with its neighbours, debt crisis and riots have left their mark on this ancient land but it continues to live and rise up against many odds.

The Motorways of the land

Motorways in Greece are smoothly paved, multi – lane, modern day, tar roads which are a pleasure to drive in. However, if one wanted to visit the vineyards situated on the hill side, one will be wiser to go horseback riding, or were that impossible, to observe from a distance the various activities of the vineyard. Older villages which are out of the way places still have winding, torturous roads still paved with dirt and stones. The motorways in Greece are uniquely numbered – the odd numbered motorways have a North – South orientation, while ‘National Roads’ have an altogether different system of numbering.

The Islands of Greece

Mainland Greece comprises of its capital Athens, named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. Athens is a beautiful city with its ancient ruins bearing testimony to the grandeur and glory of the past ages. The Acropolis, from the Pericles’ time and the beautiful chapel of Ai Giorgis are situated on top two hills right in the middle of the town.
Driving rules in the country.

Like all other countries, the age limit to hold a Driver’s license is 18. Seat belts are compulsory for the front seat passengers only but it is always advisable for all passengers to wear the seatbelt at all time due to the winding roads and motorways on which traffic is pretty fast. Loud horns with a very responsive brake system are of sure help on these roads. One cannot go beyond 50 Km per hour in the cities and over 110 KM per hour outside them. However Freeways and expressways allow one to touch up to 120 Kmph but no further. Children below the age of ten are not allowed to sit on the front seat as this is considered very dangerous.
