Types of Metal and Non-metal Applications

Metals can be used for various applications. There is a wide range of metals that are available for all these applications. Some of them are even considered as valuable materials, especially those that are used for jewellery making and other things. You may know about gold, platinum, silver and other metals used in making jewellery pieces. Another common use of metal in daily life is being a part of your electricity system. This is because it is a good conductor of electricity.

Aside from metals, there are also non-metallic elements that can be combined with the former. This combination can also produce cationic and anionic bands. These non-metals are elements that behave opposite metals. For instance, they are not good conductors of electricity. Moreover, some of them are not tangible for being in gaseous forms. Other non-metals are also waxy and brittle.

There are several applications of metals that make them even more important. Here are some types of metals along with their different applications:

– Iron. This is hard, pure metal, malleable, and ductile. It can be hammered without cracking and drawn into thin wires without breaking. It is composed of phosphorus, carbon, silica, sulphur and other elements. There are also several types of iron, such as cast iron, steel iron and wrought iron. Cast iron is formed into moulds due to its ductility and malleability. Steel iron can also be casted and hardened by simply changing its temperature drastic from hot to sudden cold. Wrought iron only has a little carbon and is still malleable.

– Tin. This is white metal that still has malleability as its main characteristic. It can be drawn into very thin sheets, shown in how thin a tin foil is. Tin can be used as coating for another metallic item to help prevent corrosion and chemical action, panel lighting, preserve food and soldering.

– Zinc. This is a bluish white metallic material that is mostly used in combination with other metals like bronze and brass. It is used in alloys, medicinal field, galvanising and anti-corrosion purposes in other metals.

– Lead. It has a soft bluish gray colour with a low melting point. It can be hammered to follow any shape that you would like to turn it into. Lead is widely used in making batteries, pigments, alloys, and making utensils and water pipes.

Aside from these metals, there are also several non-metals that can be used in many ways as well. The common uses of the non-metals are respiration, water purification, fertilisers, crackers, and ointments. These are only some of the things that you can do with non-metals. These non-metals are also useful in their own way, such as the following:
– Oxygen. This is essential to breathing, fire extinguishers, and oxidation.

– Sulphur. This is used for sulphur drugs, vulcanized rubber, matches, dyes, and gunpowder.

– Chlorine. This is used in antiseptic, drinking water and dyestuffs.
Like many other people, you can do many things that involve metals. Just take note of their uses to make good use of them.
