A Brief Tribute to Flowers
The giving of flowers has long established its significance in history, and although much of the meanings have evolved the main sentiment is still intact. People will look to a flower for any number of reasons such as birthdays, funerals or mothers day and no matter where you are in the world the ritual of flower giving will have the same or similar meaning.
It is thought that the language of the flower started in the Middle East many years ago when lovers needed to be very secretive. They invented a way to communicate by giving a meaning to each flower so they could get the message across without others knowing. The Victorians liked this language and even made a dictionary depicting the meaning of these plants.
In those Victorian days the size of a bunch was important because the bigger the bunch the more it symbolized a mans affection for a woman. A gentleman would always give his lady a bunch of these floral beauties for any occasion and the sign of a true romantic could be judged be his knowledge of the flower.
These days the large majority who give flowers may not know the true meaning but there is almost always some emotional value behind this gesture. Each flower still does in fact have certain meanings behind them for instance the red rose which means passion and love, is usually given on valentines, or the daffodil which means respect and unrequited love.
Most people have a general idea that a flower has some form of meaning, but in general it seems that any flower will do for the average person and very rarely do people give over the flowery buds for their true individual meanings these days. Although the giving of any flower usually has a good meaning behind it anyway, and it will usually bring a smile to the receivers face regardless.
Flowering plants make up the majority of the plant species and there is a huge variety spread right across the globe. They vary in colors, texture, size and smell, and they can be found in the most remote of places. Scientists have struggled to track down the exact history of the flower, but they certainly go back many millions of years,
Sure the flowering plants are not just there for us to show our romantic sides or marvel at in the spring. The plants also provide much needed nutrition for our human bodies, they provide seeds for the birds, and they are an integral for the bees to produce honey. No matter where you are in the world you know the importance of the flower.
It is said that flowers were spread across the world not only by various insects, but also by travelling dinosaurs that unwittingly broke down large areas of forests and made clearings for the new colorful plants. During their travels they also ended up planting new seeds by carrying them across the land on their feet. It is worth stopping to consider the meaning behind the bunch the next time you stop to pick one up.
