Single Cup Coffee Brewer Comparison

For offices and households alike, single cup coffee brewing has become quite the rage. No longer is it necessary to take the time and effort to brew an entire pot just for the sake of one person or one cup. No longer do drinkers of black, hazelnut, French Vanilla, et al types of coffee need panic if somebody else gets to the brewer first. Single cup brewers allow for much more timely and efficient brewing of that morning cup of coffee. In addition to that, single cup brewers ensure that the poured cup is always fresh, as opposed to standard brewers where the coffee may be sitting on the pot for hours at a time. The two biggest brands in this market are Keurig and Tassimo. This article will serve to breakdown and compare the two different types of brewers and see how what advantages or disadvantages each presents.

Price: Depending on model, each of these companies price their brewers fairly competitively. Tassimo currently offers eight different models priced between $130 and $600. Keurig has roughly fourteen different models priced anywhere between $80 and $250. The low end prices represent more personal brewers, while the higher prices lean towards models that would be a better fit for offices and break rooms. Overall, Keurig offers a slight overall advantage on price.

Versatility: As aforementioned, there are more variations available through Keurig, but both offer a large enough variety for the buyer to have choices. The differences in various models typically range in speed of coffee brewing, the number of cups that can be produced without refilling the system, the size of the cup that can be produced, and even the product being produced. Versions of the Tassimo system allow for extra water to be added to the process for a custom sized cup. The Tassimo system also allows for the cappuccinos and lattes to be produced on this machine, without comparable versions being offered by the Keurig. The Tassimo has an advantage in versatility.

Pods or Discs: Keurig uses K-Cups for coffee production while the Tassimo uses T-Discs. Neither type is compatible with the other\’s system. Keurig has a slight advantage in this category as K-Cups are more easily found in various grocery and department stores that offer single cup brewer products and accessories.

Overall: Like many decisions, this ultimately comes down to what the user is searching for. For personal users and businesses that are primarily drinking coffee and its varieties, then the Keurig may be a better fit due to its selection and ease of buying K-Cups. For users who also want lattes or cappuccinos in addition to their cup of Joe, then the Tassimo likely offers a preferable system. As opposed to recommending a specific system, the recommendation here is that both systems should be considered quality and that it would be wise to take the opportunity to try both before making an overall selection. Of course, perhaps the wisest decision is to go with both…
