Having a rodent problem can be a small matter, or a big issue. That will all depend on what type of critter is behind your rodent control problem, how long you\’ve waited to act after seeing their first signs, and how bad of an infestation you are dealing with.

Having a rodent problem is actually fairly common, whether it is in your home, or your business. Depending on the location of your home or business will also determine what type of rodents you are dealing with.

Three of the most common rodents we encounter are rats, mice and gophers. None of them are welcome guests, but that doesn\’t seem to matter to them. There is nothing like laying out some fresh sod, only to see mounds of dirt in your freshly laid lawn the next week.

Gophers and moles are a common rodent problem that can be very destructive, but can also be helpful. They are great earth cultivators by continually digging up dirt and turning it over. However, this is also why we loathe them. Gophers are loners of sorts and each tunnel system is only occupied by one gopher.

This does change during breeding season, or if the gopher is tending new babies. Gophers are most active during the spring and fall because these tend to be ideal conditions for soil. The temperatures are also more inviting, so they come closer to the soils surface and their mounds become visible.

To help prevent gophers from attacking your plants lay down netting or screen deep into the soil before planting. You can also plant your garden in a container that has a bottom so the gopher can\’t get through. If you do see signs of gopher activity in your yard or garden, try placing a Rat Trap down the gopher holes that you see. These traps work great, not just for rats, but gophers as well. They will also work well if you are having issues with squirrels and chipmunks.

Rats and mice are the most common rodent control problem that people run into. Rats tend to be more active at night, but mice are more active during the day. If you hear scratching in the walls or on the ceiling at night, you probably have a rat control problem.

Also, if you see one rat, you would be pretty safe to assume that you have more than just one. Rats like to hide out and not be seen, so if you see one, it may have been crowded out of its home. Just remember that if you have seen one rat, you can bet that there are at least ten more that you didn’t see.

Also, if you have a cat or a dog, they can cue you in on your rat problem. If they are persistently scratching or sniffing in one particular area of the wall or baseboard, then that is a clue that there is something going on behind the scenes.
