How to Install Exterior Double Doors on Your Patio
Decorating and designing the exterior of your home is about as important as making your interiors look good. Decorating your outdoor space will not only enhance the beauty of your home but it will also increase its real estate value. And when it comes to decorating your outdoors, one surefire way to do it is to install exterior double doors. Exterior double doors are quite popular among home owners nowadays, and for good a reason. An exterior double door can provide your outdoor space with great elegance and class. Exterior double doors are also quite easy to install. Just follow the steps that are provided below:
First thing to do is to measure the width of the exterior double door using a measuring tape. Since you are required to install the door frame, you need to make sure that the opening in the wall has slightly more width and height compared to the door itself. The general rule of thumb is, the width should be about an inch wider while the height should be half an inch taller.
Using a pencil or removable marker, mark the center of the exterior double door. Slide the bottom of the of the door frame into the opening in the wall followed by sliding the top part as well. The frame should completely cover all the sides of the opening. Pin the frame in place so it can be screwed through the hinge side. It is recommended that the screw should be 5 to 8 inches below the highest part of the frame.
Check the door frame if it is perfectly horizontal so ensure that the exterior double door will open and close without a hitch. In case the frame is not perfectly leveled, you can opt to use a shim.
Nail the door frame to the wall on the top part and on its sides. The distance of the nails should be half a foot.
Now it is time to attach the exterior double door to the frame. The sides of the frame are where you should screw the hinge part of the double door. Remember that an exterior double door has two hinges and they both need to screwed to the both sides of the frame. Before screwing the hinges, be sure that both doors are leveled.
After that, you can now install the other hardware that came with the door such as the lock mounting plate, knobs and C-plate depending on the type of door that you have purchased. Since you are working with exterior double door, be sure that you properly insulate the gaps of the door from the inside and apply the caulking outside.
Now all you need to do is apply the finishing touches. Hide the nail heads with a putty, smoothen the surface of the door using a sand paper and finally apply your desired color of the paint. After that, let the paint dry for about 24 hours and you are done.
