Pocket PCs

Pocket PC – as the name goes is a pocket sized computer. It was developed by the Microsoft as a Window Mobile Classic Device. It acted as a personal digital assistance and had all the specification of hardware to suit a pocket sized personal computer. These Pocket PCs have numerous applications and some work as a mobile phone and has many add on features like GPS receiver, RFID readers, camera, Barcode reader and many more.

Pocket PC is actually a small computer that can be held in a hand through which one can retrieve, store email, contacts, tasks, appointments, games multimedia, send and receive messages through MSN messenger and use it as browser of the web. Basically any device that is mobile which has the hardware and software to run Micro soft windows mobile that is applicable to Pocket PC and that is packed with specific application can be called as a Pocket PC. Along with the basic applications these Pocket PCs come with touch screen, directional pad and buttons for the hardware application. As they are based on ARM, a CPU is necessary.

All top companies like HP, Toshiba, Acer, ASUS, Dell and many more are manufacturers of Pocket PCs. The low end model of Pocket PCs ranged from $100 to $400. They went as high as $800. Many companies are selling Pocket PCs integrated to their mobile phones which require a SIM to activate the phone and the Pocket PCs applications. GPS has been integrated into some of the Pocket PCs. The new prototype pocket PCs is the Palm which markets product called Treo 700w/wx which is based on windows mobile 5.0 integrated telephony. Earlier Palm manufactured devices ran on Palm operating system.

The Windows phone has replaced the Window mobile as consumer Microsoft Smartphone operating system. The smart phones that run on Windows Phone 7 are now launched and are flooding the market. Windows Mobile which was the basis of the Pocket PCs has exited the market after nearly a decade of being sold in the market. Windows phone 7 is an upgraded version of window mobile with third party applications to a Pocket PCs.

Windows powered Pocket PCs which dominated the PDA market due to tremendous development between 2003 and 2006 in the mobile world have given way to PDA phones and smart phones from the stand alone PDA. We can still see some Pocket PCs in the market which now referred to as the Window mobile Classic PDA. There has been lot of confusion between what a Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phones and Window Mobile Smart phones.

Pocket PCs are mobile PDA without voice communication though many have the Skype facility in them. They have touch screen or use a stylus. Little search on the net will give huge information on various types of smart phones the run on Windows OS and are actually Pocket PC with integrated telephony. There are so many new products that are available that one can easily find that suits the best.
