Home decorating is something that we all look forward to in our lives. This is especially true if we have just purchased our first home and if we have a good foundation upon which to decorate. Most Rooms Have A Natural Focal Point

Find your focal point. The very first thing that you should do before you decorate a room is to determine if the room has a natural focal point. The majority of rooms have a focal point, but not all. The focal point of a room can be something obvious, like a fireplace or French doors, or something subtle. It can be as simple as a window with an extraordinary view. Whatever your focal point is, find it (if it exists) and start there.

Now Is The Time To Improve The Focal Point

Examine your focal point. Does it stand as is allowing you to start decorating or does it need a little something to make it pop? If your focal point is a brick fireplace and you are more of a stone fireplace person, why not redesign it before you get too far along in the decorating. If your focal point is that window with a view, is there something you can do to make it stand out? Would your window with blinds stand out better with shears and elegant drapes, or look better with a sitting ledge in front of it. Use your imagination and go from there.

Decor That Highlights Its Focal Point

Highlight the room\’s focal point by creating a decorative statement. A focal point, by definition is the one place in the room that draws the eye when you enter. For this reason, you want to turn it into a pleasing, well-decorated area that sparks even more interest. Make it a conversation area or arrange your best art in that spot. If you have something that you want people to notice, the focal point is the place to put it. If you are an artist with a favorite piece, this is your opportunity. Never design the entire room around one thing, even the focal point.

Decor For Your Room

Finish Your Room: Once you have found and possibly reworked your focal point, you may go ahead and design your room. If you have a large room to work with, section it off and, starting with the focal point, create your decor. You can decorate and theme the room or create a mini theme for the fireplace, around the television viewing area, (If you have a television) around the focal point, and perhaps a conversation area. There are just so many things that you can do with a large room that it is really a decorator\’s dream come true.

Paint From Your Decor Colors

Always wait until you have your colors and a scheme or theme before you paint your walls to match the decor. If you paint the walls first, you are stuck trying to match your decorations and furnishings to one color. If you decorate first, you have a variety of options for the walls.
