Five Decorating Tips For You and Your Magnificent Hallway

We so often forget that the hallway in our home is also a room and needs to be included in any home decor ideas that we may have. If you have ten beautiful rooms and a shabby hallway, you are defeating the purpose entirely. If your home has a hallway and you have not given it much thought, consider five tips that should put you on the path to a fantastic hallway decor scheme that your guests will notice.

– Perfect Place For Pictures
– Paint Continuation
– Hardwood Or Carpet (Or both)
– The Beauty At The End Of The Hall
– Lights, Please

Hello Family

1. Many of us have large families and collect more 8 x 10 and 3 x 5 photos that we know what to do with. You absolutely have to display either everyone or no one or you are bound to hurt someone\’s feelings. The hall is the perfect place to display those excess photos of distant relatives, many of whom you cannot even remember their names. Along with these photos, you should have images that you like and that have the kind of colors that match the paint, carpet, or rug runner in your hall.

Paint It Wisely

2. The paint in the hallway has to be a continuation of whatever room opens on to it if there is no door to break the flow of the first room. Without this demarcation point, the paint would look tacky if it changed colors. If there is any room in the house that is perfect for base and crown molding, it is the hallway. The length of the hallway shows off a great piece of crown molding like no other room can. Cool colors work best in a hallway to brighten up an otherwise naturally dark space.

Hall Hardwood Is Heavenly

3. Hardwood floors look fantastic in the hall as long as they run perfectly even lengthwise. If they veer off at all, cover it with a runner. However nice a highly polished rug looks in the hallway, it is a high traffic area and will soon begin to show wear. Unless you live alone and only use the hall a few times a day, protect that shine with a beautiful oblong area rug. You can place several rugs end to end if the length of the hall permits this. A rich maroon or brown with an intricate pattern makes a great area rug look for a long area.

The Natural Focal Point

4. If your hallway ends in a wall, you are in luck. This is the perfect focal point for a great piece of art. A nice antique table with a beautiful piece of artwork on top of it is the perfect conversation piece and simply cannot be topped. If your hall ends in a linen closet door, you can still make a statement with a lengthwise mirror and beautiful antique frame. In either case, your halls end is a natural focal point in your home and should be taken advantage of with something special.

Recessed Opportunity

5. The hall is a naturally dark space that needs the benefit of either bright paint and paintings or great track lighting. However, if you have ever worked with recessed light, you know that this is too good of an opportunity to let pass. You can hang some of your favorite paintings in the hallway, especially if you are the artist, and spotlight each piece with recessed lighting. This creates a natural mini-museum.

Do Not Neglect Your Hall

Regardless of how you decorate your hall, the important thing is that you do not neglect it because you can be sure that your guests will not. Why let such a perfect opportunity pass you by when you know you love this kind of decor challenge. You will be glad that you did.
