Chinese Medicinal Herbs and Face Packs That Promote Healthy Skin

Traditional Chinese health remedies have a rich history dating back more than 5000 years. Chinese skin treatments have promoted the use of herbs for various skin ailments. Traditional Chinese herbs and face packs are used widely to fight skin ageing and retain its suppleness.

The use of the Chinese Ginseng root

When toxins accumulate in the body, they take a toll on the skin as well. Like its other Asian counterparts, the ancient Chinese system of treatment believes that healthy skin is the outward projection of a healthy body. Besides following a balanced diet and a daily skin care regimen, the use of proven Chinese herbs combats skin ageing to a great extent.

One of the ancient Chinese remedies to flush out toxins from the blood and purify it is by using a root named Ren Shen, also known as ginseng. The uses of the root mostly as a preventive, than as a curative form of treatment, can be traced back to thousands of years. The Chinese refer to the root as the ‘flower of life’ because of its vital essence or ‘Qi’. Ginseng is considered to be a precious root that has triterpenoid saponins, a set of powerful molecules, vital in reducing stress levels.

The antioxidants in this root helps in increasing the elasticity of the skin. They neutralize wrinkles, fine lines and slow the ageing process of the skin considerably. These antioxidants help in the building of collagen and enhance formation of tissues. Ginseng root preparations can boost the metabolic process of the skin.

How to consume Ginseng: One way of consuming ginseng is by soaking two grams of the ginseng root in approximately 4oz of fresh water for thirty minutes. The liquid is boiled on slow fire for around 90 minutes. You can drink this concoction in the morning on an empty stomach and see visible differences in your skin within ten days. Besides Ginseng, Chinese herbs like Hongjingtian (Rhodiola), Gouqizi (Chinese Wolfberry Fruit), Lingzhi (Ganoderma), Ciwujia (Acanthopanacis Senticosi) have anti ageing properties.

Chinese face masks

Chinese face packs have also been proven to be excellent in combating the ageing process of the skin. Chinese were the first to discover the benefits of powdered pearl in face packs, known to rejuvenate the skin. Powdered pearl is known to contain essential amino acids that combine with the naturally occurring protein and calcium of the skin. A simple Chinese pearl pack combines one teaspoon pearl powder with half a spoon of honey, an egg white and water. Following application, the face pack is washed off with warm water after twenty minutes.

Another popular Chinese face pack is made out of Kaolinite, a clay mineral. Popularly known as Kaolin clay, it is used in various face packs, depending on the type of skin to which the mask is applied. A basic pack, which can be used by most skin types combines kaolin powder with rosewater, cornflour and oatmeal. Kaoline clay has age defying properties and retains the suppleness of the skin.
