A Guide to Removing Clogs Inside of Drain Plumbing

Removing clogs from drain plumbing is something that a person with little or no experience can accomplish quite easily. With the right tools and some instructions changing out equipment is actually quite easy and very rewarding. The most important step in any job which involves water piping is to shut off the water prior to beginning.

In order to shut off the water properly it is best to shut it off under the sink unit that is being worked on. If the work is being performed in other areas where the shut off valves are not accessible then it is a good idea to shut off the water main to the home. This is done by accessing the shut off valve usually located in the front yard.

The most important tool to have when combating clogs is a plunger and these are purchased at a home improvement store quite cheaply. Other tools include a plumber snake or auger tool that is inserted into the drainage tube. Also having a rag handy will work for closing up secondary openings in the drainage area.

To successfully remove a clog in a double sink or one with a secondary overflow hole, a rag is used to plug the whole. Once it is plugged then the plunger is used along with a small amount of water and needs to be vigorously to release the blockage. If this does not work then the snake is the next tool to try and this involves removing parts from under the sink.

In order to capture any excess water trapped in the pipes it is a good idea to have a bucket on hand and set under the pipes. When the bucket is in place then it is time to take off the trap to see if the blockage is there. This requires a pipe wrench or channel lock pliers to release the fitting that connects the trap to the other pipes.

After the trap has been removed it should be thoroughly examined any clogging debris. If the trap is clear then the horizontal tube needs to be removed and is done by loosening the fitting where it connects to the drainage system. After removing this pipe the snake is ready for action and is inserted into the drainage pipe that leads out into the ground.

The snake is pushed in a little at a time until it reaches resistance at which point the handle of the tool is turned clockwise in order to break the blockage free. If it does not come free right off then it may be necessary to pull the snake out a foot and half and then push it back in. Repeat this process a few times to see if the clog is freed up and if it does not move then it may be time to call in a professional plumber.

In the event that the clog is removed then the horizontal drain tube and trap will need to be reinstalled. Once they are installed, turn on the water and run it for a minute or so to make sure the drain plumbing is unobstructed. In some cases the clogged debris may stay somewhat lodged and if this is the case then a plunger works the best to break it free.
