Steel Buildings – All Shapes and Sizes

Steel buildings come in all sizes from garden sheds to aircraft hangars. Most are made from cold-rolled steel frames and sections that are pre-fabricated off-site with final assembly taking place at their final location. Cold-rolling means that the steel is rolled at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature of the material. This process increases strength and improves the surface finish. Cold rolling is suitable for single spans of up to 65 feet (25 metres) and eaves heights of up to 23 feet (seven meters. Hot rolled steel may be better for larger projects.

There are two common shapes – straight-walled and arch. While the arch configuration is cost-effective and structurally sound, straight-walled buildings offer a larger usable space per unit of footprint. Roof may be flat or pitched at an angle. Straight-walled buildings are most commonly used for office space and for vertical storage. The arch shape lends itself more to agricultural uses.

Clearspan buildings have particularly strong overhead beams, reducing the need for internal supporting columns. This type of building is good for storing large objects like aircraft or for assembling large groups of people. Buildings can be fixed permanently or may be easily removed for temporary use. Modular buildings are built in sections and then assembled on site and fitted with electricity, plumbing, etc. They are cheaper and quicker to construct and they are environmentally-friendly besides.

Adding a mezzanine floor can greatly increase available floor space for offices, storage, retail or manufacturing without necessitating a costly relocation to a bigger facility. It is important, however, not to scrimp on the structural steel work, as this can lead to undesirable vibrations in use. For further cost savings, mezzanine floors may sometimes be sourced second-hand.

Steel may also be coated with either powder or plastisol. Powder coating is an electrostatic spray process and is by far the cheaper of the two processes. Plastisol is an application of a thick coat of plastic to provide a thick, tough surface finish with good adhesion. Plastisol is suitable when a non-conductive coating is required. Coatings an be custom designed to produce the right appearance, flame retardation, abrasion resistance, to suit the user\’s requirements. It requires the application of a primer coat prior to adding the plastic finish. Steel buildings come in a range of colors.

A whole range of features can be added to a steel building: sliding doors, stable doors, roller doors, windows, skylights, awnings, garaports, staircases, lean to\’s, verandas and extended eaves. They may also be insulated. Anti-condensation barriers may be installed to prevent drips in buildings that are not insulated.

Steel buildings can be used in the domestic back garden for storing tools, gardening implements, recycling, pet food, bicycles, general storage or to provide a work area for space-consuming hobbies. They can be used as garages, workshops or barns or for keeping animals such as dogs or horses.

Larger scale buildings can be used as offices, manufacturing plants, aircraft hangars, chicken sheds, dressage arenas, beer festivals, breweries, flea markets, farmers markets or exhibition halls.
