Postural Habits That Are Good For You
Today, numerous people suffer from various types of pain such as pain in the lower back, pain in the wrists, neck pain and joint pain. Many people administer diverse types of medication while some even go all the way and have surgery performed to issue the pain. However, many a time, these methods only provide short-term relief and the underlying pain never goes away completely. The prime reason why the pain revisits in most cases is that surgery and medication fail to address the underlying cause that results in various kinds of body pain. That underlying cause is incorrect posture.
Correct body posture is crucial in maintaining good health and overall fitness. If you do not maintain correct posture, all sorts of pain are bound to crop up as the years go by. The way you sleep, the way you bend to pick up anything that has fallen on the floor, the way you walk, the way you seat yourself – all of these contribute to your posture. Listed below are some postural habits that will benefit your body should you choose to incorporate them into your daily life.
Squat down while picking up something
When you bend to pick up something that has fallen on the floor, you cause unnecessary stress on the lower regions of your back. If you are picking up something that is quite heavy, then the stress is naturally increased and eventually you will contract back pain. The proper way to pick up something is by squatting down by bending your knees. Doing so relieves stress from your back as your leg muscles do most of the work.
Do not sleep on your stomach or back
Try to avoid sleeping on your back or on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach can cause harm to your neck, whereas sleeping on the back can give rise to pain in the lower back region. The ideal position for sleeping is on your side, preferably with a pillow tucked between your knees.
Keep your shoulders back and down
If you slouch your shoulders, you bring about a rounding of the upper regions of your back. This causes an increase in stress in your elbows, neck and wrists. Hence, you should avoid slouching while you are working at your desk, driving you car or even performing certain exercises. Maintaining your shoulders back and down will increase your overall health.
Keep your head back
Try to keep your head back and your chin tucked in. Tilting your head forward causes undue stress on the muscles of your neck.
Keep your back straight
You should avoid rounding or arching your back at all costs as this is another prime reason for developing various kinds of back pain. Maintain a straight back while walking, sitting or performing various other daily activities.
Be active
Being sedentary or seated for prolonged periods can lead to various problems in the lower back. If your job requires you to be seated at a desk, get up about every half an hour to stretch all your muscles.
Maintaining a good posture is crucial in avoiding the varied types of pain that many people develop as they grow old. Following the above points will enable you to lead a healthier and fitter life.
