What You Can Do to Fix Your Rooms Focal Point
If you walk into a room and the first, and biggest thing that you notice is a television set, then you need to redecorate your room. The focal point of a room should be something that is visually stimulating all of the time not just when it is turned on. Other bad focal points are fireplaces that do not work, large windows that are not cared for, and a poorly thought out bar. Here are four tips to make those eyesores either go away or become useful.
1. Television
2. Bay Windows
3. Fireplace
4. Bar
Move That Boob Tube
Rearrange your room so that the big screen television is not in line of sight from the open doorway. Putting your big screen in a corner or against a wall on the door side of the room eliminates it as a focal point when you first enter. Create a new focal point for the room with its natural attributes or a creative decor concept of your own design. A well cared for window with a view or a working fireplace can serve this purpose. If not, a visually stunning picture or piece of art will do nicely. Better to have a nice set of chairs on an area rug grab your attention than a television.
Custom Window Treatments
If you have a large window as a natural focal point, it is well worth the effort to make sure that it gets the attention that it deserves. Custom window treatments include valances, lace shears, and curtains or drapes in such a wide variety of colors and styles that you are sure to find something that will bring your window to life and become a fantastic focal point for you room. You can theme an entire room stating with the window valance alone. Blinds, wooden slats, or bamboo sets the pace and frees your creative design.
Fire It Up Electronically
A working fireplace is the perfect focal point for your favorite room, however, when a fireplace is non-functioning, it can become an eyesore through neglect. If it is possible, fix your fireplace, if not, a non-functioning fireplace can still be a great focal point if kept clean and accessorized. Electronic fire logs can bring back the luster of a fireplace. Try tricking your fireplace out with stones, rock, or tile in front and go granite with your mantle. Granite looks great around a fireplace and will really sharpen your room’s natural focal point.
Raising The Bar
The great thing about a bar is that it has so many possibilities when it comes to decor. Old world bars are filled with fantastic antique decorative items and even the bar itself can be more than visually appealing. Contemporary bars in black with soft bumper edges look great but nothing beats the traditional oak bar and stylized barstools. Place a smoky, gold stained mirror above the bar to ensure its status as the room’s official focal point.
Whatever It Takes
It does not matter what your focal point is as long as it is done tastefully and is not a blank television screen. Other objects, like a large aquarium can be a focal point if your room has no natural attributes. Give your room a complete makeover starting with the focal point and your friends and family will talk about your decorative talents for years to come.
