The Consequences: If Gout is Not Treated and is Ignored

The Symptoms, Diagnosis And Untreated Development Of Gout

How you can find that you have really developed the condition of gout or you are just confusing gout with arthritis or pseudo gout or some joint pain or any other fatty liver diseases?

The early symptom of gout is that you may find that something is not really well in your big toe or either foot joints. Slight prickling or slight numb can be the early symptoms of gout.

What are flares ups like?

The flare up of gout can very painful, shiny, inflamed, reddish and very sore. This may occur during the midnight time and you may notice these symptoms at the early side. You may also get fever, loss of appetite and chill.

End of the attack:

If you ignore these symptoms then they might continue for two days in a week and then can reappear after 5 days of the week. This will confirm you that gout is developed.

GOUT DIAGNOSIS

Age and sex of a person is very important when diagnosis of gout is carried out. Although this disease develop in later age like 40’s or after it and so it cannot develop in children but it is important to know person’s age and sex. Men can catch gout 20 times more than women before menopause. But, after menopause, women and men both can catch gout easily. Below the age of 60, gout usually shows its symptoms by attacking the big toe joint. But above the age of 60, it will attack the other joints of the fingers or foot.

Tests should be carried out within the 5 days of the appearance of the symptoms or early attacks so that it will confirm if the condition is actually gout or not. You can simply take a uric acid test initially so that you can know your uric acid levels.

But, initial results are not always accurate as blood uric acids usually fall as excess uric acid is excreted. So to obtain more accurate results, you must undergo the test after repeated attacks.

You may undergo another test that is called as arthrocentesis. In this test, a sample is taken from the synovial fluid of the attack side. Then, this sample is taken under polarized microscope which will evaluate if there are any MSU crystals or not. The crystal is not seen by naked eye and is needle like. If it identified correctly, then the specialist may confirm the condition of gout. But difficulty appears when the doctor is unable to get enough synovial fluid out of the attacked joint. And because of this, the results may vary. So it best to get this from knee joint.

Then the doctor may compare the results with the related symptoms in the list and will give one diagnosis for it which actually relies on doctor’s experience.

LONG TERM GOUT\’S DEVELOPMENT

If gout remains untreated, then it may develop a long term issue. And you will notice repeated attacks and painful symptoms then. And ultimately the attacked joints will stop working.

Irregularly shaped lumps may develop which will affect the other joints of the body after initial attacks. Kidney stones may sometime lead to kidney diseases and ultimately kidney failure. So, after at least 20 to 30 attacks, the joints will be ceased and then gout will be termed as long term i.e. permanent!
