Why Balance the Calcium Hardness on Pool Water?
Swimming pools are great infrastructures for complementing the overall beauty of a house as well as giving a good value to any property. However, they need to be maintained regularly to preserve their beauty as well as the health of the water for the benefit and comfort of the swimmers. When taking care of a pool, the focus is aimed on its water as the chemistry of the pool water is what keeps the pool intact. Imbalanced pool water often causes many problems such as corrosion which shortens the lifespan of any pool facility, pool furniture, pipe lines as well as the pool itself.
In swimming pool care, elements such as calcium, manganese, iron, magnesium and many others present in the water should be kept in their appropriate amount or their required level to become stable in order to avoid certain water problems caused by incorrect level on water chemistry. That is why the constant checkup on the water of your pool is essential in keeping clean and healthy water suitable for human use.
Calcium hardness is usually measured and used as a reference for pool water chemistry. In this article we are going to focus on the required calcium hardness and its effects on the water when this element is too low or exceeding its required level. Basically, we only need about 150 – 250 ppm on our pool water to get what we are aiming for, the right water balance.
Although lower calcium hardness level is more acceptable than its other end, having this level in your pool water will only bring problems. Water corrosion is probably the most disastrous and the most common problem on pool water aside from the skin and eyes irritation from chemicals. Regular exposure of metals, pool furniture, pump lines, pipe fittings as well as the pool itself will eventually deteriorate as corrosion gradually eats up and breaks down metal and other stuffs. Although corrosion is common on pool water due to the use of chlorine and other chemicals, this should be maintained or at least kept at bay in order to preserve the original form of your pool.
Most pool professionals and knowledgeable pool owners resort to increasing the level of calcium hardness on the swimming pool by gradually adding calcium chloride in parts (mostly in 3 portion) to restore the healthy state of the pool water. The process of slowly amending the level of calcium hardness is in order to let the solution to mix properly with the pool water to correct the calcium element in the appropriate span of time. In most cases, this is done every four hours although it actually depends on the effectiveness and result of the adjustment.
On the contrary, higher calcium hardness usually resorts to the total replacement of the pool water as correcting it requires special chemicals and needs to be done properly. That’s why most owners find emptying the pool water the better option although this would mean spending on the filling up of your pool with new water. If left untreated, the scale buildups on the pool surface will leave a stingy feeling on the skin and eyes of the bathers.
