The nursing and health care industry has always been booming, as people will forever be acquiring illnesses and getting older. The licensed practical nursing field in general has suffered shortages many times in the past, as this type of work is self-sacrificing and difficult at times. However, a job as a licensed practical nurse is very rewarding.

Licensed practical nurses generally work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and/or a physician. A licensed practical nurse, also known as LPN or LVN, carries out the duties that are given to her by the RN and/or the physician.

These duties are varied and may include helping the patient with personal care, such as bathing, dressing and grooming. The practical nurse may monitor vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature and weight.

This type of nurse may also assist the registered nurse and/or the physician with procedures and the aftercare of the patient. The LPN may give medications to the patient. There will also be an extensive amount of documentation to be done by this nurse.

This nurse may find employment in a variety of health care facilities, such as a hospital, a physician\’s office, a nursing home, a residential facility, an assisted living facility, a home health care agency and/or a school just to name a few. They are even employed by jails in some areas.

To obtain work as an LPN, you would need to attend a training program that you will find either through vocational schools or licensed practical nursing schools. In many cases different programs are available that can be geared toward your schedule allowing you to be able to work while you are attending school, if needed.

There are some licensed practical nursing schools or vocational schools that have a 12-month program, as well as an accelerated 9-month program, which is accomplished through studying on a full-time basis.

After the completion of the nursing school program, you will be required to take an exam to obtain your LVN license. The requirements in each state vary as to what LPN may or may not do and any additional requirements that the nurse will need to fulfill while practicing as a licensed practical nurse.

The licensed practical nurse will need to renew the license every so many years while being in this profession in order to be allowed to continue practicing legally. The renewal time period is different in each state, as well as any renewal educational requirements, if any.

Finding a job as an LPN will likely not be too difficult, as demand is generally high for the person who chooses this profession. This type of work is highly rewarding, however, requires a great deal of patience and self-sacrifice. A licensed practical nurse will be exposed to many illnesses and difficult situations. However, using proper infection control methods will be extremely helpful in protecting oneself against this. It’s also good practice in your every day life. One can never be too careful when it comes to something like this.
