Effectiveness of Active Release Technology
Throughout the years, more and more therapies are developed as a countermeasure for the vast increase of medical conditions including injuries on active people. ART or active release technology is one of the popular therapies used basically on any type of individual and mostly on athletes. This therapy focuses on the management of the soft tissue of the body in order to prevent and treat problems on the nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia.
The effectiveness of this therapy developed by chiropractor P. Michael Leahy can be traced back during the first use of this technique on his patients. The 90 percent success rate on his patient during that time was instrumental on the success and popularity of active release tension today.
ART therapist usually starts the therapy by examining the patient’s body before getting on the therapy part. This is done by feeling the texture, mobility as well as the degree of tightness of the soft tissue. Using this information, the therapist applies the protocols used to address dysfunction in each muscle groups in the patient’s body.
Active release technology is effective in permanently relieving muscle pain such as shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, knee pain and even headache. It yields great results in treating injuries such as ankle injuries, back injuries, knee meniscus injuries, sports injuries and repetitive injuries. This healing technique is also used in correcting muscle weakness, scar tissue formations, adhesions and other problems.
The results can be achieved from a regular session of this therapy with a licensed ART massage therapist. During the session where the patient is partially clothed, series of motion in various massage positions are done by the patient with the therapist’s advice. This is in order for the body to further achieve best result from the therapy. The patient’s body is moved on positions that can be favorable both for the therapist and the patient. During these movements and positions, the therapist can conveniently manipulate the soft tissue on the different areas of the patient’s body that needs to be treated. ART therapist points out the importance of the movement as it stretches and gives easy and ready access for treatment on every muscle group of the body. Alertness on the patient’s part and good communication is required during the massage therapy session.
Aside from the movement, pressure is also applied on the patient’s key point areas all over his or her body. This is done in order to free any adhesions and loosen up those stiff muscles that cause muscle pain, cramps, and sprains.
Unlike most massage therapy, active release technique is not as comfortable and relaxing as most western types of therapeutic massages. This is due to the adhesions that breaks up and feels unusual as they loosen and gets back on their original form. This experience is temporary and will be replaced with a relaxing and stress-relieving feeling afterwards as the different muscle areas as well as the nerves; ligaments, tendons, and fascia of the patient’s body are back in their good conditions.
